I glanced at the title of this thread and was wondering why you were posting about cancelling a handgun course

It's a joke for the most part and worth it because it saves time with dickbag cops.

Are there any bad things about it besides it being a waste of time?

Yes, and yes.

Dont be persuaded by the new bill hb1815 by not taking the course. Why protect yourself just in the car? 90% of the time when people are getting robbed, beat up, murdered etc, its not happening in the car. Dont put a limit on protecting yourself.

Usually by that time in the course one is proficient enough with a handgun.

Who were you talking to? Rebecca Aguilar?

+1 on not relying on HB1815. Without a CHL, your pistol stays in the car when you go into restaurants, malls, etc. When you car gets broken into, you just armed a felon.

The class may be a joke, but it is the only way to get your CHL.

You want something and there is only one way to get it... that one way seems like a pretty damn "worth it" option to me.

Just wondering but do they give a specific reason why it's not worth it? Frankly I think those people are either idiots are anti-gun.

And I agree with what you said, don't lean heavily on HB1815 protecting. If you lived life without ever leaving your vehicle or home than you'd probably never need a CHL. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if more people get arrested for UCW because they did not understand HB1815 and what it entails.

I think that it is completely worth it, even if you don't plan on carrying all the time. It just opens up more options.

The only thing that really sucks is that it is so expensive up front, but once you pay it your good for a long time.

Anything other than that, and you and your instructor are subject to losing license. It is worth it to get your CHL. Not only can your protect your home "castle doctrine" but you are able to protect yourself no matter where you are. Like ScottsMach and Prophead said, you are more likely to be robbed out of your car or home, and if you leave it in your car, you not only armed a felon, you just lost $400+ in a weapon that you will most likely never see again

What are some common places that you can't carry it even with a CHL?

$140 for the license ($70 for the renewal). Classes range from $100-150 ($50-90 for renewals). So you are looking at a grand total of $250-290 ($120-$160 for renewals) The class is supposed to be 10 hours (4 for renewals) long and will include a written test as well as a shooting test. Both are very easy and most instructors will guarantee that you will pass. They will stay until you do. The license is good for 4 years + however many months until your next birthday. Renewals are good for 5 years.

In a nutshell, you cannot carry to high school, college, or professional sporting events, school buildings, race tracks (horse), jails, bars, polling place on election day, courthouse while in session, etc or anywhere posted with a 30.06 sign. The class will actually list ALL of them and explain them.

Don't let the $250 price tag scare you. You can take the class now ($100) then file for the license several weeks later. I believe you have 3 or 6 months or you'll have to take the class again.

Just don't carry in bars. Places like Chili's or Friday's are ok. Even though they have a bar, they have a single liquor license for the whole establishment. Don't carry in post offices or schools. Those are the common places. All others are places I hardly visit. It's not like half the world is off limits. These off limits places are really far and few between.

Ok to carry unless you see a *compliant* 30.06 sign. I have been to several malls and never saw a sign.

Do a View All at www.texas3006.com. You'll find very few "common" places. Just think, how many times do you go to these places a month? Is that going to stop you from protecting yourself all other times?

The only place I've come across that had a 30.06 sign was a gun show at Will Rogers in FW...but the compliance of the sign is in question as the building is actually owned by the city.

It's my understanding that a lot of Taco Cabanas may be posted as well, but they cannot prevent you from carrying in your vehicle as you go through the drive thru...

I carry everywhere I go. I have a bit of an issue with policies at work, but I'd rather lose my job than my life. I do not carry in the building at work, but it is in my car in a somewhat secured parking garage. I always carry with an extra magazine when I go to Wal Mart.

Oh, and it's a great feeling to buy a gun/ammo while you are packing...

Typically, no. But most CHL courses do the shooting test at a gun range where you can rent one.
