Rangers Sign Cliff Lee

First of all, screw that other thread, it's a clusterfuck and there's a new thread for every series for the cowboys/mavs.

But we signed him in a 6 player trade, I'm hunting for the details now.

Who else are you going to put there? Arias? Guerrero? I don't see any real viable candidate.

Ill bet they bring Davis back up. Maybe some more seasoning in the minors has helped?

He ALWAYS hits a ton in the minors, but then does nothing but strike out with the Rangers

One of the guys is Blake Beaven he used to go to Irving, I played against him in high school. Even though he is a pitcher, one of the games my junior year he hit a thousand foot bomb off of one of our pitchers lol.

Smoak was a good prospect...Davis is not. If Davis could hit better than .209, he would have been on first to begin with.

I'm going to hold my breath on that. Let's beat the Orioles first, then make it through the 11 hellish game stretch immediately after the break.

Then why not Smoak? It's his first year, and he is still considered to be one of the top prospects in all of baseball. I'm glad they got Lee, but it will be short term. I just hope it doesn't come back to haunt them.

Treanor's hitting .228? I hope he hasn't "bloomed" yet...

Hell to the yeah! Hello playoffs!

Looks like Cliff Lee and Mark Lowe are in and Blake Beavan, Justin Smoak, Josh Lueke, and Matt Lawson are out.

I'm either way on having Smoak or Davis at 1st. Davis is better defensively and for now, it's a toss up at the plate. Smoak has better at bats and doesn't strike out as much but both of their averages are crap. At least I have memories that Davis was sent down last year and called back up and did well. He's been tearing it up in AAA and was on the All Star team, so hopefully, he found a little more maturity somewhere, ala Nelson Cruz and can stay up in the bigs now. This totally puts the Rangers in the playoffs.

And like the post above, I read stuff today that all but had Cliff Lee going to the Yankees. Not sure how that deal didn't happen.

Like I said in the main thread, until Smoak gives up trying to be a switch hitter (which he most certainly is not) he's going to be a sub-par player. He can't hit right handed, he can't walk right handed; he can't do anything right handed but throw and yet he still goes up there every at bat against left handed pitching and struggles.

I see, but you're giving up on a rookie...Lee for 1/2 a season vs. a top prospect. IF the Rangers win the division, it was worth it. But only IF they win the division.

Okay you win with Treanor, I was at work and didn't have time to research. I sure thought he was hitting better than that. His RBI production is pretty good though for the short time he's been here.

Personally I hope Smoak turns it around and wins ROY. I also think Davis at worst will be a mediocre hitter with great defense and tons of power. Besides the Rangers still have Garko if he completely stinks it up again.

Or hey Berkman and Oswalt are both available.

Huge huge deal. We are getting one of the top 5 pitchers in baseball. A lefty with pinpoint control who is a proven winner. Plus, we kept the fucking Yankees from getting him! I mean if he had joined the Yanks, you might as well hand them the title right now.

What scares me though is he could be just a rental this year and then he walks and signs next year with one of the New York teams. I seriously hope Nolan wraps him up for at least three years. We gave up too much talent to get him for 12 or so starts.

I figure we are renting Lee. Im cool with that IF we win the West, and do something in the playoffs other than getting swept.

I think Davis is a interesting player. The guy has some serious pop when he can actually hit the ball. The strike outs are high... but tears up AAA, so maybe its time he finally adapts to MLB pitching. Hope so, I like him more than Smoak. The glove at first is important.

The Yanks wouldn't offload some prospects that the Mariners wanted, don't know exactly who. I would rather see a switch hitting first basemen that is patient. But let's all remember the 4A player Cruz was before breaking out and becoming a steady Major asset for the Rangers

This IS a rental! Let's be clear on that. Cliff lee will not be a ranger next year, he's going to sign a HUGE contract that the rangers won't be able to do! You have to think he's good for a couple playoff wins though!

Even if they can't sign him we get a first and second round pick next year. I think they'll be competitive though. The Rangers should be spending $35m more a year on a team in this market. Obviously we aren't Boston or NY but the Rangers need to at least be in the top 10, right now they are 26th. I mean really, the Blue Jays have a higher payroll.

Yeah and their players pay 25%+ more in taxes than Texas players. Still all the more reason the Rangers should be able to sign a Cliff Lee. If the Rangers offered him $20 million and the Yankees $25 million, he'd have considerably more money left at the end of the year playing for Texas. He won't however get those $10m a year corporate sponsors that Arod and Jeter are getting.

How do you figure we get draft picks next year? Was that part of the deal with the mariners? Cliff Lee is an unrestricted free agent next year, so we have nothing to bargain with.
