don't spend too much on your first set.
hop on craigslist/ebay, buy used. stick with better clubs a few years old.

you will want a driver and a 3 wood.
a set of irons with a good cavity back. irons usually consist of 3-PW, but honestly 3 and 4 irons are harder to play, hybrid 3 and 4 irons are a good choice.
add a wedge and putter and you've got yourself a set.
stick with regular flex shafts.

All of this. Buy decent clubs that are a few years old, don't buy brand new bottom end clubs. Hybrids will be your friend as you learn as well, as he mentioned.

I'd really recommend investing in some lessons as well; it's a sport that's nearly impossible to teach yourself. If you've got some friends/family you can play with that are familiar with the game they can help, but even then you really need someone who knows what they're talking about and not just someone who plays.

I have a set of Taylor made 320 irons for sale. These were my first set of clubs two years ago and I just picked up some Nike clubs.

I would like to get 125.00

you could also buy used from PGA superstore or golf galaxy. I would suggest going to PGA superstore and try hitting a bunch of different "game improvement" or cavity backed irons. Find something that is comfortable for you. PGA will let you hit whatever you want for free, and the good reps may give you some free pointers

DFW is the one golf mecca that has TWO PGA stores. Both are in Plano.

Another option to consider is that GoldSmith and Edwin Watts golf had regular sidewalk sales. I bought a set of Callaway X16 irons for $200 a few years ago. Damn good clubs. I also got my Nike Sasquatch from an Edwin Watts sidewalk sale..

Outside of that, I totally agree with Momo...

Also, get some lessons. You'll enjoy yourself more.

On that note, I'm going to Top Golf tomorrow

Starting off it really won't matter about the clubs, you just need to get out and start swinging. Anyone will tell you that golf is about consistency. You should be at the driving range at least 1-2 times a week hitting a bucket to get your swing down. Once you get your swing down and the feel of your swing the rest will later fall into place.

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said,"Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the Promised Land." Now Obama has stolen your shovel..., taxed your asses, raised the price of camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

i went to golf galaxy in arlington and they have a nice selection of used clubs. nice putting surface and a place where you can try out some clubs and hit with them. Im just saving some money from these next few work checks and then go shopping. Ill probably practice at Fun City, I saw online that you can hit 240 golf balls on the driving range for 20 bucks and also they have a 17 hole par 3 course.

Golf Galaxy is alright.
Golf Smith seems to have largest selection of used clubs.
PGA Superstores have the best testing facilities.

I just upgraded my clubs and am selling mine off pretty cheap. They arent really beginners clubs but they were my 2nd set.

If you are up in the plano area let me know. I've got a player club membership at the PGA store and i'm always practicing up there. Going up there tonight to work on the new irons.

What kind of clubs are you selling? And what's the membership get you at the PGA store?

it's an set of older forged titleist DTRs 1-SW! yes, it has a 1 & 2 iron.
i bought a set of adams a4 irons.

the PGA players club membership is a one time fee of $100 for 1 year.
it gives you use of the practice facility (unlimited use but 30 minute limit if the lanes are busy)
comes with a free 45 min lesson.
free regripping service for up to 15 clubs.

i just use it as a practice range without having to sweat my balls off.

That in itself is worth it. Now is it the practice area where the simulators are or the other lanes?

the booths closer to the front with the projector screens are for club fitting and instruction.

the practice area are nets further at the back of the store. they dont have projector screens but they have 3 monitors, dual cameras, lots of shot statistics and video replay.

sucks I dont live in Plano, and being that I live in Grand Prairie it would suck traffic wise. Who did you get as a beginner set. Cause I looked at some this weekend and most of them said that the driver that comes with it isnt good. Wilson i think makes a good set, I read some goos reviews on it. Is there a Golfsmith in Grand Prairie or Arlington?

My first set was some generic sporting goods store brand like Knight or Ram.
The total price for Driver, 3w, 5w, 4-PW with bag was sub $200. Me and my bro used them for about a year before he took em. I wouldn't recommend that route. While the clubs were functional, they weren't too good.

I think you would be better off with a set from a better company that actually hits better and feels better.

I figured out where to go get golf clubs at a cheap price. The Goodwill stores around here sometimes have some clubs that arent in bad shape. I bought a driver, 3-5-7-9 Irons, putter, and pitching wedge for like 25 bucks. There old, but they are perfect if your just needing some clubs to hit with or learn your swing.

I taught myself how to play...never took lessons. It is doable but you have to be obsessive about it and practice a lot. My first set was the 96 Callaway Big Bertha irons. Very easy to hit and they go a long ways. I would suggest getting these as if you buy a cheap set of irons that dont give you the necessary feedback when you hit the ball, you are gonna develop bad swing flaws.

Good deal on some 04 Callaways...

I have a Mac tec 2 driver and some clubs if anyone needs some. Just want $60 thats what I paid for the driver so the clubs are free. The clubs are not a complete set but I know there is a 8, 7, 5, 4, 3. They are right hand clubs.
