You people are retarded.

He is opting out of his contract, so Cuban can sign him to a new deal for less money. Why, you ask? He's made his money, and it's never been about money for Dirk. Dirk wants to make less so, they can sign a big name FA (see Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, and a long list of others).

You've smoked entirely too much crack if you think Dirk is leaving Dallas. Seriously.

http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archi...is-word-1.html

Way back in the week before Christmas, 2008, the Mavericks had just completed an east-coast road trip, on which Nowitzki sat in an empty practice gym in Washington and said the following:

"Every team is trying to be a player in 2010,'' he said. "Every team is trying to clear money under the cap so they can make a move.

"I'm very fortunate that I've made a lot of money in this league, even though I've never really played for money. I love the sport. I love this organization. Obviously, I want to win. I won the MVP, and individually, there's nothing really left but winning a championship.

"If that means I have to play for less money, it's all possible. It's all open.''

Those comments appeared in The Dallas Morning News on Dec. 23. Over the weekend, news broke that Nowitzki will, apparently, opt out of his deal to help secure a new contract for himself and allow owner Mark Cuban some financial flexibility to try to pursue a big fish in the free agent pool.

Just thought it was worth a reminder that this has been on Nowitzki's radar for a long, long time.

It's also noteworthy that, at the time, he also said this:

"That's still a long time away. Nobody's talked to me about extending or anything like that. I never really thought about it because we're in the midst of figuring this thing out.

"I've got two years and I don't want to throw these next two years away and say basically we're waiting on 2010 to get another player in. That's not how I want to look at these next two years. I still feel I'm in my prime and I don't want to just throw these next two years away.''

Well, in the big scheme of things, consider them thrown away.

How much more proof do you need? Dirk has openly stated, many times, that he will restructure and take less to free up as much money as Cuban needs, in order to get another big name in here.

The Mavs organization was the first to let the press know that Dirk was probably going to opt out of his contract. To me it sounds exactly how bcoop is portraying it and I'm really not much of a Mavs fan.

Wibon on PTI made a good point that if Dirk feels that if this is the best that Dallas is going to be then he might leave to go to another team. I dont think his likely going to happen though

Lebron James here we come!!!! Dirk is DA MAN!!!! To add to what bcoop said, Dirk is wanting a 4 year guaranteed deal along with a no trade clause. This deal would make him and Kobe the only two players in the NBA with that clause (according to FSN).

i was going to respond but bcoop already said it

dirk will resign for less IF the mavs can land a star. it will be shitty if they dont cause then i have no idea know what dirk does.

dirk is one of the few people that will take a paycut and step out of the drivers seat for the right replacement. it's one of his best traits but also its one of his biggest weaknesses.

no one thought steve nash was going to leave Dallas and he did. So its possible that maybe Dirk could leave Dallas.

Man that's an entirely different sort of circumstance with Nash. Cuban didn't think Nash would be able to hack it anymore so he essentially let him go without getting anything for him. I think Cuban learned alot from that.

Dirk is more than likely going to renegotiate his contract and sign up for less money in order to facilitate some cap room and help to get more talent on the team. Dirk realizes his clock is ticking and he's only got a few more years to bring a championship to Dallas.

Got this from ESPN Dallas a little while ago.

Quote:
Dirk's situation not like Nash's in '04
from ESPN.com - Dallas Mavericks Blog by Tim MacMahon
It’s natural for Mavs fans to worry about the possible departure of Dirk Nowitzki after the news that he plans to opt out of his contract.

It just isn’t necessary.

The angst is understandable. After all, it’s only been six years since the Mavs lost a franchise cornerstone for nothing in free agency. But Dirk’s current situation is a lot different than the circumstances surrounding his buddy Steve Nash’s departure in the summer of 2004.

Mark Cuban might talk Dirk into taking a hometown discount, but money definitely won’t be the reason the best player in Mavs history puts on another uniform.

It made too much financial sense for Nash to go to Phoenix. The Suns offered $65 million over five seasons – more than twice his career earnings at that point. The Mavs wouldn’t match, making an offer for $20 million less due to concern about Nash’s durability. (Whoops.)

There are no concerns about the durability of Dirk, who has averaged at least 35 minutes and never missed more than five games in a season during the Mavs’ decade-long run of 50-win campaigns. Cuban has said several times that he’s confident that Dirk, whose game is based on skill and not athleticism, can be an elite player well into his 30s.

The best-case scenario for Dallas is that Dirk opts out and quickly agrees to a four-year extension for less than max salary – easing Cuban’s financial burden, but not creating cap space -- then plays a major role on the Mavs’ free agent recruiting committee. That’s also a likely scenario.

The waters certainly could be muddied by a team with cap space making a max offer. But Cuban won’t let Dirk’s decision come down to money.

The bond between Cuban and his best player is too strong to think it will be broken this summer.

That wasn’t the case with Nash. He had a friendly relationship with Cuban. Dirk is truly friends with his boss, who went above and beyond behind the scenes to help Dirk deal with his personal turmoil that became public during the 2009 playoffs.

Plus, Cuban’s relationship with the agent won’t be a problem, as it was during the Nash negotiations. That’s because Dirk, who has cashed more than $120 million worth of checks signed by Cuban, doesn’t have an agent.

Forget the speculation about what other teams might be a fit for Dirk. It’s a safe bet that the Mavs will lock him up to a four-year deal this summer. The question is whether he’ll give his good friend a bargain.
