UFC on Versus 3/21

Just for ZUl8tr and mstg86...

UFC Live on Versus this sunday at 8 pm our time

Main bouts
Brandon Vera vs John Jones
Junior Dos Santos vs Gabriel Gonzaga (damnit thanks Don)
Chiek Kongo vs Paul Beuentello
Alessio Sakara vs James Irvin

Under Card bouts
Clay Guida vs Shannon Gugerty
Eliot Marshall vs Vladimir Matyushenko
Duane Ludwig vs Darren Elkins
John Howard vs Daniel Roberts
Brendan Schuab vs Chase Gormley
Mike Pierce vs Julio Paulino
Eric Schafer vs Jason Britz

We get to see if John Jones is ready to take that next step along with seeing if Junior Dos Santos continues to show how good of a boxer/striker he really is.

Sakara's got some sick hands at times at well. Should be fun to watch especially on a sunday night and FREE.

My picks. I can't pick one on the Kongo/Buentello match up. It could go either way and will be a trainwreck to watch, but entertaining none the less. (Hopefully lol)

Jon Jones is a badass, but Vera is just sick at LHW right now. I think that Vera will take Jones down to slow him up and submit him.

JDS will murder Gonzaga, period.

My last pick, Dana White > Strikeforce by rape choke. lol. He's really sticking it to them right now with all the shit he is doing. But it's great for us fans.

I have always been a Brandon Vera Fan. But John Jones looks pretty quick with his hands & has some damn good ground game & throws. Im going to go for the underdog in this fight. Will be watching tom

I kept thinking Vera was going to throw an armbar on Jones they way he leaves his arms out there. He just waited to long and caught a viscious elbow, pretty quiet up until that elbow popped Vera.

The news on the UFC site/blog made it sound like Vera was beaten silly, getting rained on with elbows and thrown around too. Must have been watching another fight? Wonder if they will feed him to Silva anytime soon. Should be interesting as he has some mad size and skills.

Yeah, I dunno why Vera was taking so long to set Jones up for something, he had more than his share of chances. Jones was very sloppy sitting in Vera's guard. If he did that against someone like Maia, Nate the Great or Anderson Silva, he'd get his arms ripped off.

Silva is at 185....Jones is a big 205'er...

Yes Silva can step up to 185 but the UFC has nothing to gain by their "future" of the LHW division stepping up to fight the P4P King of MMA.

Understood, just using other great BJJ guys as an example who wouldn't just let Jones sit in their guard like that. I know I was screaming at the TV when Vera was just sitting there. Ugh..

It's easy to scream at the TV when you aren't the one on your back with strong/athletic National Colliegiate wrestling champion trying to knock orbital bone into your eyeball.

Come over to my gym. I'll introduce you to Randall. He's Lesnar's long lost brother. Just as big, strong, fast and a former national wrestler. Trust me, I don't just sit there beneath that monster, let alone anyone else! LOL!

Come on Nate, he even had his feet WAY up on his hips at one point, he just didn't execute. Going for position is a gamble at times anyways and you might get hit which he ended up getting anyways. Might as well get hit going for position trying to advance than just sitting there waiting for it to happen.

I find it so much easier to advise on what I would do from the comfort of my couch vs actually doing it with someone raining strikes from above me. Granted, you would hope that BJJ comes second nature to these guys but when you're exhausted and been hit with several hard blows your train of thought tends to be just a tad bit different then it would be in a training scenerio. Having said that, Jones is a bad mother fucker.

We have Wes Lesnar( at Alvarez...I'm just fine with not wanting to be on my back with these guys lol.

The difference is when we take risks, we get passed and give up position...He gets passed he gets mounted/eats more leather, fight may end etc too.

And outside of the 2 fights last night, how many fights in the last year on average do you see getting finished from inside someone's guard with GNP?

Very true. But Vera was no where near exhausted, it was only the first round and Vera is known to have an good gas tank. Vera is also a brown belt, that he should have been able to pull off with ease. He might as well try to go for it. Being flat on his back he's more prone to getting a bomb dropped on his head. If he had been moving, at least he's harder to hit and has a chance to scramble. Vera is better than that. I'm not taking anything away from Jones really, he was schooling Vera standing up, but that sloppy ground shit Vera shuld have been able to deal with.

Might as well go out trying is what I am saying. Rather than just sitting there in guard waiting for it to happen where it's only a matter of time since he was letting him sit straight up. Ugh...sloppy! Drives me insane! lol.

I hear what you're saying. And yep, it was the 1st round but really there is no telling how much energy/effort he used prior to getting there. It was almost like he was "resting" for a sec more than trying to setup for some type of submission. I know one of the main things is to keep things tight but it was like he didn't even do that. Like I said, its easy for me/us to pick his performance apart while watching it on TV. Maybe he was waiting on Jones to do something else and didn't expect the left elbow to come crashing down. Who knows!

I'm with you there... I really don't think Vera was expecting that elbow at all. I'm not saying he should have just sat there prone like he did... Jones isn't the guy you wanna take your time contemplating with from what I've seen... But I don't think he expected to get his face broken.

Right, because no one throws elbows when they are in someone's guard right? Come on. He was just lazy. It was Vera's own fault he got caught with that and it could have been avoided. I'm a Vera fan, but I'm not going to make lame exuses for him when HE screws up.

I'm on my cell phone so I can't quote myself easily, but again I'll reiterate that Vera shouldn't have laid prone for so long because shot can happen. According to MMAjunkie, shit DID happen: three fractures in vera's cheekbone. Oh snaps!

He's lost his last 5 of 8 fights now. I'm expecting him to be cut any day now.

What is exciting about Jones is that is he only 22 years old. As long as he doesn't have any serious injuries in the future, we have yet to see what Jones is capable of. Just all depends what direction he goes with his training. His stand up is good, wrestling/takedowns seem pretty good, but his grappling blows. But if he fixes that, he could be a force in the division.

I have to agree with you there, he looked too comfortable there, he should have been busier. No sense of urgency you might say and he paid dearly for it. He will not be around much longer at this rate.

I would love to see how Bones Jones reacts to a fighter who can land on him. Does he have a chin? How well does he defend a submission attempt? I have not seen him fight but once and was really looking forward to seeing him tested.

Yeah, it's kinda the same situation with Carwin. He hasn't been out of the first round yet, really hasn't been hit and definetely hasn't been tested on the ground. I'm really excited about the card coming up this Saturday.

I'm confused on this quote. Now Vera is 5 of his last 8, so at the time of this post he was 4 of his last 7. I understand that not all of those were at LHW, but should you have really used "is just sick at LHW" when he got beat his fight before this at LHW?

I've always been a fan of Vera's. He's really talented and a good all around fighter. Success just seems to be always just barely out of his reach. But if you look at the guys he's lost to, it's the who is who of the divisions and he's got alot of company on those lists. Hopefully they don't cut him, but I'd understand if they did.

Wow to Dos Santos.
Congrats to Kongo. (He needed a good win.)
Omg to Jon Jones.
Damn to James Irvin.

This card was pretty good but from the get go it had the makings of one weird event. With Irvin getting punched in the eye, and Paul Buentello dislocating his pinkey and allowed to get back in the fight plus Kongo's knees to a downed opponent! haha very funny all the whacky stuff all on one card. Oh and Very upkicking Jones and getting a point taken away! This is just not the stuff you see often and it all happened on one card!

Looking forward to Mir vs Carwin. I hope Mir is not looking past Carwin but I truly believe if he can get passsed Carwin he win the rubber match with Lesnar.

I need to stop betting with Silvercobra03 because I keep losing.
