Jerry Jones has been awfully quiet... What do ya'll Dallas fans think he has up his sleeve?
His hands are tied. I think the Cowboys are only allowed to sign ONE free agent this year, and the salary they are allowed to pay him is shit. Which means, he isn't going to get anyone worthwhile. The NFL put restrictions on all the teams that made it to the playoffs. I'm pretty shocked the Jets were able to sign LT, in all honesty.
I'll have to dig up some info to back up what I said. Give me a few.
Google Final Eight Rule for more. It's the same reason your Saints aren't going to be doing anything big.
Unless a new collective bargaining agreement is reached by March 5, the start of the new league year, the NFL will operate without a salary cap in 2010. Restrictions are in place to prevent a free-agent gold rush, though, and one in particular - the Final Eight rule - directly affects the Cowboys.
The final four playoff teams - Colts, Saints, Jets and Vikings - will not be able to sign an unrestricted free agent unless they lose one of their own. The four teams that lost in the divisional round - Cowboys, Cardinals, Chargers and Ravens - have the same constraints with two exceptions: they can sign one unrestricted free agent with an estimated Year One salary of at least $5.5 million, or sign any unrestricted free agents with an estimated first-year salary of $3.7 million or less.
As Jones indicated, the Cowboys still have some flexibility to sign moderately-priced free agents. But concerning their own roster, only backup guard Montrae Holland qualifies as unrestricted and 13 players, including starters Miles Austin, Gerald Sensabaugh and Marcus Spears, will be restricted because they have fewer than six accrued NFL seasons. That rule means many other young, high-profile players across the league will be off the market, too.
