Want to improve your ball striking and distance?

Your weight needs to be shifted to the left leg (via hip slide) before any turning of the hip takes place. This will put your downswing on plane with an increase in the amount of lag in your swing...which will result in better contact and much further distance...BUT, hip slide is bad on the backswing. If you slide back, not only can you not rotate back, when you slide forward you will have just returned to your starting position and you will either push the ball right, or if you are a decent player, you will hook the piss out of it. Too much instruction focuses on increasing hip turn through impact, when really most hip turn in better players occurs after impact.

Watch Tigers hips slide forward on the downswing and where they are at impact....

Another visualization would be to put the club down and grab and flat rock and throw it so that it will skip across the water...notice what your hips do when you make this throw. Your weight will transfer to your left hip (except Don of course) and then your arm will drop down to the slot for release, your hips will open and the rock releases and slides across the water. This is the same for the golf swing. Many teachers will tell you that golf is a pull swing...ie, pulling club through zone with the left hand...when actually its the opposite. Actually, they work together but the right wirst is the release point of the swing...as in the rock throw. Once you figure out how to slide the hips to the left side and drop the arms "in the slot", this game gets much easier to play.

Said another way, the sliding buys time while it gets your arms into a good position further along in the swing where quick rotation can impart the maximum velocity along the right plane.

The above how I generate clubhead speeds in the low 120s...in order for you to generate this speed, you have to get the hips slid forward to the left side and then the more open you can get your hips at impact the more speed you can generate. That assumes you've pushed forward properly...If you stay on your right side and spin your hips like crazy and the ball isn't gonna go as far.

All the pros any any consistent 275+ yard ball driver does one thing in particular, whether it's subconscious or not: they start their downswing with the lower body. A lot of beginners start with their shoulders, even if they know how to release the club and whatnot, they still start with their arms... less turn thru the ball (less hip movement), less speed thru at impact (upper body turn releases tension, therefore losing torque) and a lot of times an abbreviated follow through because they know how they are supposed to finish (body facing target, etc) but they get there for the wrong reasons: the follow through and finish are supposed to be byproducts of unloading death and despair upon that little white ball in a manner that boots it's ass 275+ yards. Not to look pretty.

I also love watching all the shaft flex you can get with 115+ mph club head speeds...

The downswing should start with the right knee going toward the traget...this will promote the left shift of the pelvis to extablish most of the weight distribution over the left foot and allow your arms to drop down from the inside...thats all you do...drop the arms straight down and push through the zone in a whiplike manner due to the torque you established in your backswing. If you can get your hips open after you get to the left side and before impact, you will hit the ball a long ways.

Don, that is an illusion due to the cameras inability to keep up with the swing...the club should be flexed the other way...but it never flexes that much or you wouldnt be able to hit the ball more than 50yds. Go see how far you can hit one of your meatballs with a spaghetti noodle!

Oh, absolutely. If it was that far forward in reality, it would have spent damn near all of it's energy. I should have phrased it differently.

Nah. I've already got the long(er) ball down now, it's just a matter of dialing it in

I tend to think of the golf swing as a poem...

I didn't either, until I went and played.

Don't ever play golf. It's more addictive than any other sport I have tried.

I like golf, but there is no way in hell i can afford the cost to play everyday. Now if some of you guys took the electric car credit on your taxes some golf cars do apply haha. Basically a free new golf cart. I dont remember if this was last year of when it was. I just remember reading a few articles about it.

What you might call solitude is something i look forward to.

Don't play every day! Here's how I've cut my costs down tremendously...

$29/month: Bear Creek GC player development program (unlimited range balls and use of all practice facilities)

I play Meadowbrook and Westdale Hills (both 9 hole courses) because they're cheap and let me get some golf in when time is short and I just wanna play 9.

$16 with cart Riverside
$20 with cart any time I want to play Bear Creek
$20 with cart Iron Horse
$20 with cart Mansfield National
$25 with cart Fossil Creek

I play 6-8 times a month, including the 9 holers. I spend roughly $150-170 a month for my greens fees and the PDP... I could technically just chip, pitch, putt and use the range facilities at Bear Creek for $31.xx a month. It's all relative.
