greatest athlete ever.....?

Been pondering about this for a few weeks now, and I can't come to a conclusion. My gut instinct is Michael Phelps, what he did in Beijing was incredible. Other names come to mind though, Ali, Jordan, West, Maravich, Bolt, Rice. What are y'alls thoughts????

I'll show your president the same respect you showed mine.

When I think of the greatest "athlete", I think of someone whose skills will translate into almost every sport. Therefore, very few baseball players, golfers, bicyclists would be included in this discussion. IMO.

To be honest, if we were talking about this 15 years ago, I would put Jordan, Griffey, and Jackson as the top 3. Two of those guys are baseball players, but there skills could have been dominant in any sport probably.

I don't see how you can say D. Sanders or Jordan has the greatest athlete. They both tried baseball and they both sucked at it. Doesn't sound like a great athlete to me.

I see your point with Jordan, but Deion did play MAJOR league baseball and was somewhat effective.

Maybe, but they are still respectful. .263 batting average, .319 obp is not bad. Especially when he was splitting time with football. Think about if he concentrated just on baseball for his whole career.

i am a big braves fan and watched deion play for years, his numbers arent great but the dude could fucking play, always turning singles into doubles and doubles into triples, and always a base stealing threat, just the way he would make a pitcher concentrate on keeping him close to the bag was amazing, and those kinda stats dont show up on paper...

I'd have to give a vote to Bruce Jenner. When you win a gold in a sport that includes 10 different events, you gotta be pretty good at all of them.

Nick Diaz. He boxes professionally, fights MMA professional, competes in national triatholons, competes in world ranked jiu-jitsu tournaments, etc...

Not the greatest ever but still a hell of an athlete for not having huge rippedness about him.

Barring the hip injury, I gotta say Bo Jackson would have been the shoe in. He excelled in two sports at the professional level. Neither was a "hobby" to him like Neon.

141 home runs, all star game player, all star game MVP, Heisman trophy winner, MVP in two bowl games, pro bowl ...

My other pick would be Jim Brown. Football obviously, all-american lacrosse player in college, lettered in hoops as well at Syracuse and finished 5th in nationals in the decathlon. Yanks also gave him a minor league deal.

Jenner may have beat him in decathlon but add in lacrosse, basketball and baseball and Brown comes out on top.

And of course, Jim Thorpe and Dave Winfield (Winfield was also drafted in the NBA and NFL... no other person has accomplished being drafted in all three sports.)

I guess Jim Brown could beat Jenner in 2 of the 10 events...

If it's just PURE athleticism, I'd go with Lance Armstrong. Most guys here can't relate to cycling at that level, taking time off, and still finishing the Tour very high up on the list.

Yea, but what would Jenner do in football, baseball, lacrosse and basketball against Brown?

Obv. Brown is second in the deca but by how much? How would Jenner fare as a professional football player or collegiate basketball, football, lacrosse or baseball player? Brown proved he could do them all. How would Brown have fared if he gave up on football, lacrosse and basketball and concentrated in the decathlon? (sidenote: it is also rumored that Brown was a hell of a boxer and could have made a career out of that as well.)

In fact, Brown could have gone to the Olympics for the deca in 1956 but declined the invitation to concentrate on the upcoming football season.

In his senior year at Syracuse he scored 14 points at a track meet in the morning (pretty good!) and left to get on the lacrosse field to help Syracuse defeat Army to maintain an undefeated season.

And he accomplished this all at 200+ lbs.

He is also sitting in the college football, pro football and lacrosse hall of fames.

Armstrong... he has a set of lungs. He ain't fast. He can just go on and on and on. After his biking days he stepped out to the marathon and pulled down a 3:00. A good time but something accomplished by a good portion of the American population if they would put their time into the sport.

My tongue was in my cheek when I compared Jenner to Jim Brown. Armstrong "ain't fast"? By whose standards? On a bike? When he was a teenager he was killing big-timers in criterions all over the country. He ran marathons because he was bored...I really don't know what can compare to 7 time winner of the TDF.

I agree. "Big Mig" was a MF'r when he won 5 TDF straight. Those guys ride 150 miles a day...IN THE MOUNTAINS! Not hills, MOUNTAINS. I have a good friend that went to France after the tour one year, just to ride the route. His entire group were very accomplished cyclists' from all over the country, and very few could even FINISH one mountainous leg on that route. Some of those climbs are hard for a man to even walk up, much less ride up. Most folks have no idea...

Obv the TDF is brutal.

Armstrong isn't fast. Just like the majority of triathletes aren't fast. Just like the world record marathon holder isn't going to compete with Bolt.

I'll take a guess but I'll put Armstrong's 40 yard dash in the upper 4s.

The simple fact is he can do upper 4s over few 40 yards spread back to back. But regardless he ain't never gonna go sub 4.5.

He also isn't going to be nailing a 450' home run, competing at even the Div II college level in basketball and most certainly wouldn't be able to take more than a few snaps as a running back in the NFL before being carted off on the stretcher. Not that Brown would win the TDF but I bet it wouldn't have taken him long to train to do all the segments. Regardless of training, Armstrong could never suit up and play an entire NFL game at running back.

He also would have trouble in events that go east to west (i.e. cutting in football, stop/start change direction.)

I love Jim Brown, but the older we get, the better we were. Jim Brown couldn't finish ONE leg of the Alp d'Huez. Lance ain't no fullback, but 230lbs ain't going far up a mountain on a bike, either. Brown's 40 time was in the 4.5's...which is pretty average by todays standards.

Come on dude. I could finish the legs. Not at the speed they do it but damn... it is a very popular "fantasy" tour.

I have friends that have done it in their 40s.

Lance ain't nothing but a cyclist. Pure and simple. One sport, one training.

You still haven't addressed Brown's prowess on the baseball field, lacrosse field and track and field. He wasn't a one sport wonder. Lance is.

Fitness wise he should have been well below 3:00 hours in his marathon attempt. I base this on what Ironman triathletes do in the marathon after swimming 2.4 miles and biking 112 miles. Craig Alexander popped a 2:45 marathon in 90+ degree weather AFTER the swim and bike. Lance would have DNF'd.

Lance is a biker... plain and simple. The world's greatest biker... but still just a biker.

They take a "sight-seers" route. I've cycled...a lot over the years. They can't take folks up all those routes.
Hell, my daughter played soccer through college, and the lacrosse team recruited her to play, so she lettered in lacrosse on year, too.

I've read a few replies to this thread and I'm almost afraid to post the name of an athlete because I feel the question is subjective. And the reason I feel it's subjective is because I want to know in what way are you considering them the best athlete ever? Is it because of what they did in their career, records they hold, etc? The fact that you have soo many different sports it's hard to even compare one athlete to another. For example; I don't feel it's fair to say that Michael Jordan is a better athlete then Lance Armstrong or vise versa because you've got 2 totally different sports and 2 totally different training styles. I mean Lance would get schooled on the basket ball court and Michael wouldn't last 2 hours on a bike at a competitive pace with Lance.

Except for olympic athletes and triathalon athletes you don't have the athletes that compete in multiple sports like you used to, even then there were very few.

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said,"Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the Promised Land." Now Obama has stolen your shovel..., taxed your asses, raised the price of camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

Word. Bo Jackson and Jordan instantly came to mind.

I think the "greatest" athelete needs to be good at more than one thing. Phelps can swim, and Armstrong can bike, but can they do anything else and be competitive? Hell, even Romo can start for the Dallas Cowboys and be a pro caliber golfer. Bo Jackson did football and baseball, very well. Jordan is the greatest round ball player to ever live, played profession baseball (not great, but played) and I hear he's quite the golfer.

Maybe there are some Tri-athletes out there that you could consider, but I'm talking sports and not being the best at excercising.

It would be hard to argue with Bo Jackson.
