Thumbs down Sean Avery suspended for "Sloppy Seconds"

http://watch.tsn.ca/nhl/clip117996#clip117996

http://www.krld.com/Dallas-Stars--Se...nts--V/3420393

Wow, that was kind of childish.

If you don't know what he's talking about: He's referencing Calgary player Dion Phaneuf who is dating Avery's ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert.

I don't care what sloppy division she is . . . she's effing hot!!!

He's suspended indefinatly.

The Stars players are pissed. I heard Modano on a sound clip talk about how hard they've worked to give the Stars the reputation for being a classy orgainization, and this guy has tarnished it.

Now I'm on the side saying signing this A-Hole was a bad idea.

Personally, I think it's hilarious. I don't see anything wrong with what he said, and it DEFINITELY was not deserving of an indefinite suspension. The people that run the league are a bunch of fucking pussies. I wouldn't last 24 hours in the NHL if shit like that was a suspendable offense. I've said worse on, and off the field in sports I've played. I've said worse, to my bosses. I've said worse to customers. And I've said worse to competitors. Seriously? Sloppy seconds? That's offensive? Put your big girl undies on, and get the fuck over it. Really...

How is that a bad role model? I guess them fighting in the NHL is better for the kids than him making some rude remark that kids don't understand?

Apparently, he has a pretty good history of saying offensive things... It's HOCKEY! Phaneuf should just bust his ass if he doesn't like it. The NHL should have no role in this at all.

The problem with it is his past. He doesn't pick his spots and say something, it happens over and over. With that being said, he and others have said much worse. A player has to be smarter than to say something like that on camera. He wasn't just saying that to Phaneuf but a couple other guys as well as Avery has made his rounds with the Hollywood scene.

I get that he's a shit talker, instigator, etc. But really, who gives a shit? I mean, since when is it the NHL's job to moderate what people say? This isn't Nazi Germany.

Professional sports associations have much bigger problems to worry about, than someone calling someone out on taking his sloppy seconds. Shit, look at football!

Oh, wait. The NHL holds their players to a higher standard. Give me a friggin break.

When you are a league that is not in the top three you have to moderate what the outside public sees from your league. I completely understand what you are saying there, and as someone that likes Avery I don't completely agree with the suspension but I understand where Bettman is coming from. The main problem at hand though is the personal vendetta Avery has incurred from Bettman. Is it self imposed? Yes, when you say that you can single handedly run the league better by yourself without the whole league office it will cause things to come back to haunt you. As far as holding players to a higher standard. I don't think the league has to as for every 10-15 NFL/NBA players in trouble with the law you might, and that is pushing it as well, hear about one NHL player getting in some kind of legal problem.

Yeah, I get that. But from everything I've heard on the radio, from non hockey fans, the consensus seems to be that now those people want to watch some hockey to figure out what this Sean Avery guy is all about. LOL! Any press is good press. They should have just let it go.

They've been treading thin ice (no pun intended) since the strike, haven't they? I'm not a huge hockey fan. I used to follow the Stars, but nothing like I do with football. I haven't watched 5 minutes of any given game since they came back from the strike. And judging from friends/coworkers, etc, I'm not the only one.

Wow, so even you find her attractive?

How is what he did even on par with something Like Bertuzzi bitch punching Moore? They need to quit fagging up hockey. The guys that play used to be animals. Hell, they still are animals, just not allowed to act like it.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I used to watch a large portion of the games before the strike. Now I'll attend a game if I get free tickets, but I can't tell you the last time I flipped on the TV and watched a game for more then 5-10 minutes.

Which has been a point that Avery himself has pointed out. The sport could market a hero/villian scenario and draw more attention.

One thing I would like to point out tho. This is more than likely a 2 game suspension, nothing more. Avery is meeting with Bettman Thursday and IMO will be given another verbal lashing and be done with it.

According to league revenue they are doing better, aside from the TV aspect. The larger issue with hockey not having the popularity that sports such as football/baseball/basketball is the inability for many people to play it growing up, therefore not having the attachment to it as they do other sports. It always has been a niche sport and always will be.

And for the "strike", just to be correct it was not a players a strike, instead it was an owner lockout so the league could introduce a salary cap.

It doesn't have to be a niche sport; the NHL's management chooses to make it so.

Hockey seemed to be gaining a lot of momentum going into the strike. Even coming out of it, they made some good ideas with making it a more offensively minded game. However, things like this incident and cracking down on fighting don't make people more interested.

Hockey could be the bad-boy of American sports. Instead, the NHL has tried to assimilate it with the MLB, NFL and NBA; those are three organizations that hockey will never be.

They suspended him because they didn't want a repeat incident of the bertuzzi-moore fiasco that happened a couple years back. There is a place to say dirt like that in hockey, and that would be on the ice. Todd Bertuzzi blatantly sucker punched Steve Moore which ended up with Bertuzzi having assault charges filled on him.

If the NHL doesn't suspend him they may as well put a big target on avery's back, which then puts the rest of the stars in the lime light. If someone goes after avery, the stars have to back him, or look like complete asshats.

Personally i found the comment funny, but i see why he got suspended after what happened in the past.

It gained momentum because that was the time that hockey made the major expansion south and was still the new kid in town. It goes back to the majority of people will support the sport they played growing up and hockey will never be that in the USA. I agree that taking the clutching and grabbing out has made it a better product, but you will never sell me on the fact that a higher offensive output will sell the game.

Suspended over remark about sloppy seconds? That's weak.

Conduct detrimental to the league my ass. How about a simple fine, but instead they reacted like he is being accused of murder.

For the most part. We joke with on of my customers about making her water tight, all the time.

I've told a customer that they could go fuck themselves, and my boss backed me up because I was right.

I've said worse on, and off the field in sports I've played. I've said worse, to my bosses. I've said worse to customers. And I've said worse to competitors. Seriously? Sloppy seconds? X2.

Really, an indefinate suspension over a comment? Gimme a friggin break. There's guys that have been seriously injured, and the person that caused the injury has gotten a game or two.

This is waaaay overkill for a friggin comment. If it was so bad, why did the media air it?
I guess because the media doesn't have standards, just another group of ignorant pieces of shit.

When the "Most interesting man in the world" needs advice, he calls me.

If you have little kids up at 10pm on a school night watching the news, you need to hone up on your parenting skills.

I have a 13 year old and a 10 year old and they are in bed by 9:30.

Avery is a special case and I agree with the league on this one. The organ-EYE-zation was playing captain Save-A-Ho when they picked him up; He has some things to offer but he's also widely known for being a complete asshole and doing something of this caliber every day.

He is a distraction that the Stars don't need right now. The story is that all the other players on the Stars hate his guts - he gets shit started and then won't show up and the rest of the team has to go fight battles he started.

I'd be willing to bet he's played his last game as a Star. I hope so.
