NFL suspends Pacman Jones indefinitely

Last week Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones thoroughly explained why he thought Adam "Pacman" Jones did not deserve a suspension following his latest controversial incident. Upon further review, the NFL thinks otherwise.

The NFL announced Tuesday that the oft-troubled Cowboys cornerback has been suspended indefinitely without pay by commissioner Roger Goodell due to his "alcohol-related altercation" with a team bodyguard at a Dallas hotel last week. Jones, who was suspended for the entire 2007 season due to multiple violations of the league's personal conduct policy, will miss at least the next four games before Goodell determines the final length of the suspension.

According to a league press release, the decision on Jones' possible reinstatement will be pending his strict compliance to NFL and Cowboys-sponsored treatment plans plus progress reports supplied by clinical behavior experts to Goodell.

At the NFL meeting in St. Petersburg, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he had spoken to the player, whom he described as being "devastated" by the news.

In a statement released by the team, Jerry Jones said: "We respect and support the decision of the commissioner. I regret that this issue has brought negative attention to the Cowboys and the NFL. We move forward with a very clear knowledge as to what the process will be for a possible reinstatement. Adam is well aware of where he stands and what he has to do."

Adam Jones was fully reinstated by Goodell just before the season opener after being suspended for 17 months and missing the entire 2007 season because of numerous off-field problems. He has started all six games with the Cowboys.

But Jones returned to headlines after an incident one week earlier on October 8. Dallas police said officers responded to a disturbance about 11 p.m. but that the incident was over by the time they arrived. Some some hotel employees reported overhearing a scuffle in the men's restroom in the lobby.

Adam Jones and his bodyguard, Tommy Jones a Cowboys employee empowered by Jerry Jones to help protect the player from himself told police that everything was resolved, and both were driven from the hotel by an acquaintance, police said. The bodyguard told police he didn't want to press charges.

This incident, which Jerry Jones originally described as "kidding each other" and "jiving around," may not have drawn any attention for a player without Adam Jones' rap sheet six arrests and 12 incidents requiring police intervention from the time the Tennessee Titans drafted him in the first round in 2005 and sent him to Dallas in April to complete a long-discussed trade.

A day after the incident, the Dallas owner spent an extensive news conference explaining why the team would not be suspending its player, calling the altercation an "aberration." But Jerry Jones did admit at the time, "I did not dream that we would get in a situation where we had all the structure in place and literally have an incident that casts lightly with him publicly or with the league that would involve the very people that you're doing the structure with."

Tennessee originally got a fourth-round pick in the April draft, and a sixth-rounder next year for Adam Jones. The Cowboys could get back a fifth-rounder in 2009 pending Jones' punishment.

Shows how much you truly know.

He alone is responsible for defending 11 out of the 17 total passes the Cowboys have defended this season. But hey, what do I know?

Posting a link doesn't count. How the fuck is someone supposed to find that in a search. Admit it, you didn't post it first. On top of that, if you go to your link that you posted, it says for four games, not indefinitely.

The crux of the deal is Dallas giving up a fourth-round pick this year and a sixth next year, plus Jones getting a four-year contract. The Cowboys would get back a fourth-rounder in 2009 if Jones isn't reinstated, or a fifth-rounder if he returns then gets busted again.

I agree. I initially thought it was blown out of proportion. I had no idea his probation included a "no alcohol consumption" clause. Now that I know this, it is what it is. He violated it, he should suffer the consequences. It just sucks that Dallas is losing his on field ability.

Well I guess it's time to get Jenkins some playing time. He is afterall a 1st rounder. Plus, the other Roy is suppose to be coming back in week 7. We could use davis or watkins as another DB in our dime package.

he had several chances, and blew it.

Why not give the opportunity to someone who has done their time, followed the rules, and is hungry for success enough they keep their head clear and focused on winning ball games.
