Spurs acquire Ely for frontcourt help

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The San Antonio Spurs traded forward Eric Williams and a draft pick to the Charlotte Bobcats for forward-center Melvin Ely in an exchange of veteran backups.

The Spurs said Tuesday that the draft pick is a second-round selection in 2009.

The 6-foot-10 Ely has averaged 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in 24 games for Charlotte this season. Ely is in his fifth NBA season, including two seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Ely, who had asked to be traded in late December, had played little in Charlotte after signing a one-year, $3 million qualifying offer before the start of training camp.

The 6-8 Williams has averaged 2.6 points in 16 games this season, his 12th in the NBA. The Spurs traded center Rasho Nesterovic and cash to the Toronto Raptors last summer for forwards Williams and Matt Bonner and a second-round pick in 2009.

The Bobcats will be the seventh team for Williams, and his sixth in four seasons.

They are however whipping the 'Nets ass. They're up 46-22 with only a couple minutes left before halftime.

Nets have closed the gap a bit, but are still down by 16 midway through the 3rd.

I wasn't here. Spurs did well last night though. Pistons were hot as shit since picking up CWebb. That right there might be the game the Spurs needed to get back on track. Give them a week off with the All Star game and after the break, I bet they'll go on a streak. Too bad though, no streak is gonna make up 9 games in the standings.

The Spurs are still one of the best teams in the NBA just not an elite team anymore.

I'm not worried about getting the #1 seed anymore. Hell, just making the playoffs would make me happy as a Spurs fan in 2007. As long as we don't play the Suns, Mavs, Rockets, Jazz, or Lakers we'll be in good shape.

I always had to guard Melvin Ely. Good player.. he was always quiet and seemed like a stand-up guy.

So basically you don't want to see the Spurs play anyone in the West Conference playoff picture? Good luck with that.

Pretty much. Unless we can somehow play Denver in every round.
