Fifa Cup

Does anyone actually give a shit about this stuff? I can't figure out how it's the world's most popular sport, it's an offensive blowout if a team scores two goals in two hours.

well,it might get more popular if the american's could actually compete against the rest of the world! thats why you don't see much press about it cause' we(american's)don't dominate this sport whatsoever! ESPN would rather promote shit like golf, pool, and freakin' nascar!

Read my post, I'm asking a question, not bitching. I've been trying to get into it, but a 2hr game only has 12 seconds of highlights. I'm a little confused on why the world is so absorbed with it, to the point where they rush the fields and head-butt the refs and stuff. So enlighten me, oh master of all that is sport.

I think that if you have not played the sport at a decent level you may have a hard time appreciating watching it on tv. For the American fan, I don't think that it translates very well to tv. You cannot see and appreciate the speed in which the game moves on tv. I think it is somewhat comparable to watching a hockey game for most people. I have not been able to watch much of the World Cup but from the few games I have seen, they have been very low scoring which is never good for the casual fan.

I always find it funny that the people that tend to find this sport boring are quite often baseball fans. You want to talk about boring???!!!!

If you aren't a soccer player then you probably won't enjoy it, just like some of us don't enjoy looking at black and white pictures of cars from the 40's.

It's called the beatiful game for a reason. If you don't undestand that it's just not your thing. I would rather watch the World Cup on Channel 23 than the NBA finals, that's just me...

Your argument here was that there are not enough goals scored. I just showed you a game where 6 goals were scored. Then again, I believe I read the same thing about your feelings on hockey as well.

If you see a football game that ends 7 - 0 because both defenses clamped down and wouldn't let anybody within the 40 yard line, do you call that a bad game?

Dont get me wrong, Im not trying to put old cars down or anything, Im just using that as an example. The games are long yes; but when something like this happens......it's pretty amazing. A soccer field is 120 yards long and about 10 yards wider than a footbal feild, look how far out the is when he takes this free kick....

It's obvious from that score that it is a ridiculously lopsided team matchup. Just because the Mavericks can whoop the dogshit out of the Haltom High basketball team doesn't mean it's even worth talking about. Most games have 2-3 goals scored in them, and that's it. Yes hockey is the same, and it can be pretty boring. And yes, a 7-0 football game is a fucking snoozer - aka "bad game."

That is Roberto Carlos, he plays for Brazil and Real Madrid. He is getting old now though. I think he will retire before too long.

Well, that was Brazil vs. France so it wasn't lopsided. That was just an outstanding touch. I dont think any goalkeeper in the world could have stopped that.

Danny the reason it is a "World Sport" is because you dont need any equipment to play it. Anyone can play soccer no matter how poor they are, thus its appeal to the Everyman. To appreciate the game takes time. Soccer is like hockey with 11 men on a huge ass rink. When you play hockey you notice how a forward will use his feet in the corners and body position to protect the puck in the slot....things like that. Soccer is the same only the camera has to be zoomed out so far that the average Joe isn't going to see that stuff. Watch a game with someone like Matt93Cobra on TiVo and have him point out the nuances and you'll begin to appreciate the skill it takes to pull off some of the moves these guys do at full speed. Not to mention these players (midfielders at least) run roughly 8 miles in the 2 hour game.

Devastated By U.S. World Cup Team's First-Round Loss, Nation Grinds To Halt

June 15, 2006 | Onion Sports

NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, and WASHINGTON, DC—With the Dow Jones average down over 600 points, factory productivity in a downward spiral, and workplace attendance down by nearly a third, experts say the U.S. World Cup team's heartbreaking 3-0 defeat at the hands of Czech Republic on Monday has brought life across the soccer-crazed nation to a virtual standstill.

"What happened in Gelsenkirchen has indeed dealt a grievous blow to the morale of the American people," said President Bush, who had promised his constituency a swift and speedy victory in the World Cup this year and whose popularity has taken a 9 percent hit since the U.S. team's loss. "I want the citizens of this great nation, the world's only remaining superpower, to know that I grieve alongside them and urge them to be strong in our hour of darkness, and urge them to return to their jobs and schools despite their heavy hearts."

Mere days ago, the feeling across the nation was one of great joy, eager anticipation, and optimism for the prospects of the most talented American team to ever take the field. It is estimated that over 85 percent of U.S. households were watching the USA–Czech Republic matchup. And going into the game that most Americans have been waiting for, analyzing, and all but living for during the past four years, schools, offices, shopping centers—everything, in fact, except vital services—closed their doors as the game began.

Now, days after the end of penalty time, many of those doors are still closed.

"I take full responsibility for losing the game," said Claudio Reyna, whose shot off the crossbar of the Czech goal as the U.S. trailed 1-0 in the opening half of play has been shown to coincide with a significant bump in the suicide rate, a momentary increase in reports of domestic violence, and a $0.45 increase in the per-gallon price of gasoline. "But we still have games to play in this opening round. I realize that the United States, more than any other country, loves this game. But that is no reason for so many people to cancel their weddings."

The general feeling of hopelessness may be felt across the United States, the nation the rest of the world thinks of as Pelé's adopted home, the land that popularized the term "soccer," and Americans are finding many different ways to voice their despair.

Hundreds of yards of black bunting hung over the head and arms of the Statue of Liberty has yet to be removed by the New York City Parks Department; similar shrouds have appeared on Mount Rushmore, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Hawaii's Pearl Harbor Memorial. Las Vegas casinos are running skeleton staffs at the tables and doubling the size of security shifts, at once worrying over their empty floors and fearing retribution at the hands of World Cup gamblers who bet on the U.S. out of loyalty. And the House of Representatives, which traditionally remains closed throughout the World Cup, called a special session for the specific purpose of introducing a bipartisan bill that would change America's national sport back to baseball.

"This cannot last," said Bruce Arena, coach of the U.S. World Cup team and by extension effectively the second-most powerful man in America, in an address televised simultaneously on every national channel Wednesday night. "We cannot have crops unharvested in the fields, the doors of our churches sealed shut, the Stars and Stripes fixed at half-mast, all because of our dishonorable standard of play. We cannot ask you to forgive our loss to the Czechs, as that must be left to the wisdom of the God of our fathers. We have always been a nation blessed with strength, not only in our love for our soccer teams, but in our love for one another, and we must call on both now if we are to endure these dark days."

At press time, the U.S. team is scheduled to play Italy on Saturday and Ghana the following Thursday, and the National Guard has reported moderate casualties while attempting to contain hooligan activity in the nine largest U.S. cities.

Well a tie is pretty much as good as a win because of thier far behind goal differential.

US has to beat Ghana. Italy has to beat Czech Repub. for the US to make it to round 2.

I'm no soccer expert, but that was the worst officiated game I've ever seen. That 1st red card against the U.S. was fucking rediculous! I think the U.S. played awesome considering they were down a man for the whole 2nd half.

That 'Own Goal' crap is stupid. It should be just like in hockey where the last offensive player who touched the puck gets credit for the goal.

i'm suprised i'm actually watching the world cup. i think it's pretty cool that everybody in the world loves soccer and the us is just now getting somewhat good at it (ranked 5th by the fifa). hell, for once in world play the americans have to actually prove something, instead of feeling like they're going to get it handed to them (i.e. olympic basketball play). but that's just my opinion

and my i ask, so is Real Madrid like the NY Yankees of baseball. Buying all the good talent in order to "win" a championship?? just seems like everybody on their team is a great star in there home country.

Real Madrid is known to have the best players in the world. And to answer your question yes it would be like the NY Yankees of baseball.

Also Real Madrid has won more cups than any ather soccer club in all of Europe. They hold the record, at least as of "2000 World records go" I dont' know if it has changed or not.

The USA soccer team

I think that eventually as more and more people start watching and playing soccer, the USA will eventually become a hell of a team to play against. I mean they started calling the USA "the team of everyone". Which means they have players from all over the world that could bring their talent with them. That could really make the MLS, a leage similar to that of EU and South America, which is a faster and more exciting to watch.

The mexican leage is fun to watch as well (compare to the MLS at this moment) but it's slower and not as exciting at least in my opinion.

my son will someday lead the US team to a victory in a world cup!!! but it will not be until at least the 2014 cup!

Maybe... but certianly not until US/MLS teams start generating the revenue to be able to sign big contracts.

Youth soccer in America is HUGE, but then there is a sharp dropoff around the highschool level.

Fact remains that talent will always go where the money is, and that isn't in the MLS yet. I know this sounds greedy, but until kids start seeing million dollar contracts being inked in the US for soccer they will either:

A) Switch sports early enough
or
B) Go to a big name team across the pond

But Italy was running 10 vs. 11 in the first half. Officiating was horrible, I don't think I've ever seen two people given red cards for two separate, unrelated incidents in the same game.
