No, I'm not implying that he was the ONLY thing going on offense. But when he has the athletic ability to take off and run EVERY play, you have to play a different style defense. The two slot defenders have to stay 5-7 yards off the reciever, to help with run support when VY takes off and runs. Thats why TX receivers were running all over the field WIDE OPEN last year. (Definately helping VY's pass %) Those WRs will have defenders in their face this year. Changing the complexity of the offense. And lets face it... it wasnt until Mack brown basically gave up coaching duties, and let VY make his own plays, and decisions that Texas became unstoppable last year. Well, guess what? This year Mack goes back to actually "coaching" the team, which will be a good thing thing for opponants. Lets hope he starts off, right where he left off with the Applewhite/Simms debacle with his 2 prize FR QB's in 06'
OR, are you one of those sooners that is spinning y'alls qb situation and saying that "thompson was the better qb all along and we'll be ok this year"?? "stoops just saw more of a future with Bomar that's why he moved Paul to wr" because, we all know that Paul Thompson is better than Vince Young, right? i mean, that's what y'all said at this time last year, correct?
The reason so many Sooner fans are "spinning" the QB situation, is because since before the 03' Sugar Bowl most Sooner fans thought that Paul Thompson should have been the guy. And that he got screwed on his well deserved starting role during an opening day loss to TCU, in which noone on the Oklahoma team deserved to keep their starting job. Thompson was the scapegoat. Bomar, was the future of the program, and Stoops decided to ride the growing pains and play the freshman Bomar. End of story.
I'm not drinking the Kool-aid....... I KNOW Thompson is a downgrade from Bomar, but they dont need a BIGTIME playmaker at QB. They've got one hell of a defense, an ALL-American tailback, and REALLY good receivers. The O-Line is my only concern. And yes...its a big concern. But this squad is good enough, that it just needs consistant play from the QB, to run the offense, and everything else will take care of itself.
I'm not making any "predictions" of undefeated seasons and playing in a BCS bowl, but for anyone who thinks that because of the Bomar situation, that this team wont be damn good....you've got another thing coming.
I've kept my mouth shut for the most part, because of some immature posters, but once the season plays out, I'm sure we'll see a pretty fun year in the Big12.
I havent missed a home game in 17 years, and I am a true Sooner fan Win or Lose.
