Nobody else is going to jump in on this? We should do some sort of contest - the person who guesses the closest gets to have everyone else who contributed buy them a drink... something like that anyways, just to keep it interesting.

In the past few years I would agree that they did not deserve the accolades that they got in rankings.

However, after coming off of a 9-3 season, two of those losses were then #1 USC by 3 points and #4 Ohio St. by 14.

and

They are returning:

QB Brady Quinn (158.4, 292/450, 3919 yards, 32 TD/7 INT)

WR Maurice Stovall ( 69 catches, 1,149 yards, 11 TD)

RB Darius Walker (253 carries, 1,196 yards, 9 TD)

I'd say they are worthy of a top 5 ranking.

I don't think they deserve a #1 ranking either. I have 'em at #3. I don't particularly like the Golden Domers, but I can't deny what they did last season and what they are bringing back to the table.

Because I don't rank with prejudice... they're gonna own college football this season. Have you seen their schedule?!?!

At GA Tech... Win
Penn St... Win
Michigan... Win
At Michigan St... Win
Purdue... Win
Stanford... Win
UCLA... Win
At Navy... Win
UNC... Win
At Air Force... Win
Army... Win
At USC... Win (USC's only loss of the year)

ND will definately be somewhere in the top 3 with some of the first place votes, but after pounding USC in their last game of the season, they'll get the votes. Remember, the have an NBC exclusive contract. Big media contracts are always favored in EVERY poll. Ohio St. will be #2 with the only other undefeated record and there's your championship game.

That run of Penn State, Michigan, and then Michigan St. is gonna take its toll. They might drop one of those.

Ya, but that early in the season and two of the three teams are at home with the weakest of the three as the only one on the road... I'm not too concerned, but will definately watch it.

I wouldn't call Michigan the weakest of the three. Chad Henne and Mike Hart are fuckin top flight and they still have Bass and Manningham at WR. It'll be a real good game for sure.

If Hawk was at Ohio St one more year, I might have flip-flopped #1 and #2. But all in all, I think I'm staying with what I've got.

LOL, its not like Hawk was the only guy they lost on 'D'. He was the best out of all of them, but Donte Whitner, Bobby Carpenter, Ashton Youboty, and Anthony Schlegel were all 'D' studs there at Ohio State.

True, but he also led their defense. The guy could make needed chages at the drop of a dime. He reads plays well.

And the winner is..........Denny with an average of 4.84

I took the AP Rankings released today and subtracted these rankings from them and then divided by 25 to get the average difference on each position. If a team was not ranked I made it a 25 score.

1. Denny: 4.84
2. SVTVenom: 6.16
3. Hurley: 6.92
4. Geof: 7.72
5. Unkoricky: 8.48

ESPN's Ivan Maisel ended up with a 5.84

*EDITED*

Ehh... I don't really care about the rankings released prior to the start of the season - it's what's at the end that matters.

Congrats to Denny anyways though.

Considering that I put a few teams that won't get any recognition whatsoever until towards the end of the season, I'm sure it will be quite high.

Wow 99bringit....i dont think i could disagree with you more. Personally I dont think that there is any way that OU will be in the top 10 maybe even the top 15 now that they lost their starting QB. Plus you have UT and TCU as the only teams in the top 25 from Texas...hmmmm I guess we will see.

Texan By Birth, Techsan By Choice.

Glad to hear it!!!

From an analytical standpoint, heres how I view the Tejas schools...

TEXAS This is the only team, that I feel is really Top 25 calibur. Top 5 calibur actually. With Chizik @ D coordinator, theres not a whole lot to ask from the Freshman QBs, other than to run the offense and make as few mistakes as possible. Vince Young was the entire offense last year, and without him, Defenses will be able to pin their ears back, without the worry of a 6 ft 6 Monkey taking off and running.

Texas A&M You would hope that there will be improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Reggie Mcneal was a cancer on that team, and would expect them to be better offensivly as well. They have quality athletes and a proven coach. Playing in the Big12 South will be there biggest obstacle, as they have probably the easiest non conference schedule in Div 1 football. They might make a few appearances in the top 25, but I see them fas a top 30 team.

Texas Tech Once again, the Raiders will sport the conferences best passing offense. Buit unlike in years past, there wont be a 5th year senior at the helm. Combined, with the departure of Torean henderson that the offense wont be quite as effective as years past. Defense will probably once again, be a question. They should hang around the Top 20 for a majority of the season, but will lose 4 conference games. (just like last year )

TCU with a schedule like theres, they might play the entire season undefeated. (That should be good enough for a ranking somewhere int eh 23-25 range)

Baylor I like this squad actually. I'd even go as far as saying, they will be playing in a bowl this year.

Houston Kolb is a monster...but theres not a whole lot of support.

What else am I missing? Are you trying to tel me that this is SMU's year?

he was the ENTIRE offense last year? Hell, i'm glad to hear that!! So Charles, Sweed, Pittman, Thomas and S. Young were just a figment of my imagination? VY was damn good, but even he couldn't do EVERYTHING by himself and you know it. So please tell me you don't actually believe your own statement up there.

OR, are you one of those sooners that is spinning y'alls qb situation and saying that "thompson was the better qb all along and we'll be ok this year"?? "stoops just saw more of a future with Bomar that's why he moved Paul to wr" because, we all know that Paul Thompson is better than Vince Young, right? i mean, that's what y'all said at this time last year, correct?

and yes, those are actually what some people are saying and believing over there on soonerfans.com

argh, only 25 more damn days to go

No, I'm not implying that he was the ONLY thing going on offense. But when he has the athletic ability to take off and run EVERY play, you have to play a different style defense. The two slot defenders have to stay 5-7 yards off the reciever, to help with run support when VY takes off and runs. Thats why TX receivers were running all over the field WIDE OPEN last year. (Definately helping VY's pass %) Those WRs will have defenders in their face this year. Changing the complexity of the offense. And lets face it... it wasnt until Mack brown basically gave up coaching duties, and let VY make his own plays, and decisions that Texas became unstoppable last year. Well, guess what? This year Mack goes back to actually "coaching" the team, which will be a good thing thing for opponants. Lets hope he starts off, right where he left off with the Applewhite/Simms debacle with his 2 prize FR QB's in 06'

The reason so many Sooner fans are "spinning" the QB situation, is because since before the 03' Sugar Bowl most Sooner fans thought that Paul Thompson should have been the guy. And that he got screwed on his well deserved starting role during an opening day loss to TCU, in which noone on the Oklahoma team deserved to keep their starting job. Thompson was the scapegoat. Bomar, was the future of the program, and Stoops decided to ride the growing pains and play the freshman Bomar. End of story.

I'm not drinking the Kool-aid....... I KNOW Thompson is a downgrade from Bomar, but they dont need a BIGTIME playmaker at QB. They've got one hell of a defense, an ALL-American tailback, and REALLY good receivers. The O-Line is my only concern. And yes...its a big concern. But this squad is good enough, that it just needs consistant play from the QB, to run the offense, and everything else will take care of itself.

I'm not making any "predictions" of undefeated seasons and playing in a BCS bowl, but for anyone who thinks that because of the Bomar situation, that this team wont be damn good....you've got another thing coming.

I've kept my mouth shut for the most part, because of some immature posters, but once the season plays out, I'm sure we'll see a pretty fun year in the Big12.

I havent missed a home game in 17 years, and I am a true Sooner fan Win or Lose.

i think you mean Gregg Davis when you're talking about coaching the offense and yes, i hope he doesn't go back to pre-2004 play calling i.e. 3 yrd outs

and everything you say about OU, you can say about UT. Except that UT has one of, if not the, best OLines in the country. So that just leaves the QB question. McCoy/Snead don't have to be another VY(hell, who can) but yet just be another Major, but Colt/Jeaven are just a "little" more mobile than Major was LOL. So you think the WR's are going to have problems getting open this year, huh? Well, I'm feeling better about this season already

This year UT should be considered Running Back U
