Kobe's 81, or Wilt's 100?

So, after further review, what was more impressive?

Wilt's was 19 more, but he was a freak of nature. More athletic, taller, faster, stronger than anyone else in the NBA at the time...he was literally a man among boys. In his instance, the game turned into a freak show, with both teams fouling immedicately with every posession.....imho, messing with the fabric of the game.

Kobe's came against a team composed of players that were just as athletic or more so than he, just as tall or taller than he, and I dare say Kobe doesnt spend just a whole lot of time in the weight room, as compared to others. Point being, there is nothing that seperates him from the other players out there, except for talent.

Kobe's also came within the natural flow of the game. They were down by 14, and the dude jsut took the game over and went off. While Wilt hit 28 of his 100 points from the FT line, and most of the rest of his points from in the paint...and most of those were dunks/layups.

Also, as a little comparison:
When Jordan averaged 37.1 in 1987, he averaged 24.79 FTA pg. Kobe averages less than three attempts more than Jordan, thus far.

The % difference between the two, at least when looking at what ESPN calls a "True shooting experience," is minute. (TS pct.= true shooting percentage (what a player's shooting percentage would be if we accounted for free throws and 3-pointers) ) 55.4 to 56.2%.

Finally, to those that put this down due to the overall record of the team, Jordan's team had a 48% winning average, while Kobe is at 43%.

So, all that aside, it seems to me that Kobe's effort far eclipses Wilt's. Thoughts?

I would say Wilt's 100 points is still on top. Its an insane amount no matter when or who you played. I also think he hit a lot of free throws in that game as well.

What Kobe did is unreal. What Wilt did was unreal. Imagine though that Kobe would still need another quarter's worth of points to pass Wilt. The games are different now and back in the 60's, just as the NFL is different: A long interception was perceived to be just as good as a punt. The NBA game is much slower and with far fewer shots taken. Wilt took 63 shots I believe....most TEAMS average around 75-80 shots today.

I don't think it is fair to either one to try to compare the two.

BTW what did this thread have to do with Jordan?

No comparison.
Wilt also averaged like 20+ rebounds a game.

Kobe is lucky to have 2 or 3 and maybe 2 or 3 assists!!!

Also, I don't think you can compare Kobe To Michael Jordan yet!!!

I'd also like to add this. Toronto just basically gave up. At least Golden State tried to stop Wilt by fouling whoever touched the ball. They did what they could to get it out of Wilt's hands. Toronto was just going throught the motions. I say Wilt's is still the greater accomplishment.

I don't know how much a difference it makes, but remember there were no 3 point shots when Wilt got 100.

Kobe is playing against taller, faster, and way more skilled players now days! so regardless of his personal life it was a great accompishment! but he will never be a MJ either but he did it and thats that!

Exactly, I like this point. You can say all you want about how much talent the NBA has today, but Toronto showed none of that talent defensively. They basically knew he was gonna get the ball everytime and didn't do anything about it.

Well if you have to ask....

Fourty-four years from now, Wilt will have gotten 100, and Kobe just got 81. So IMO the answer is simple.

If you want to contrast and compare, you can do that all you want - but no one is going to outscore Wilt, even if he was the big fish in the little pond of his time, the game was played differently, blah blah blah.

I'd take Jordans like 61 point game vs the Celtics
rather then Kobes 81 over a horrible young Raptors team..

But cant argue Kobe> anybody in the NBA today..

I don't see him winning anymore titles. He's not a team player. If he was, Shaq would have gotten him at least one more, maybe two!!!
I'd rather have Lebron on my team!!

Maybe I am wrong but didn't he play during the same time that bill russel played for boston, if so then he wasn't the only man playing against boys

You can not compair ....old players vs new.... Fact is he was the best of his time and that makes it great..... Kobe will never be a legend..he is just another good point maker ..no more no less...

To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Toronto have a bottom of the barrel defense?

I would say it's impressive, but I just don't think the stars of today can live up to the legends of yesteryear. Pro ball is past its prime.

Also, didn't Kobe put up 60 some odd points against Dallas while sitting out the 4th? He played the whole game against Toronto.
