ATV road trip to Wolfpen Gap in Arkansas

I will be home from Afghanistan for the month of October and want to get a good weekend of riding in. Here is the information:

When: Depart October 15th (Friday) around 5pm. I live in Sachse, TX, so we could all meet at my house and leave from there. The objective here is to get to the campsite Friday night, camp, and then have all day Saturday and most of Sunday to ride. We will return Sunday night.

Where: Wolfpen Gap just east of Mena, AR
Google Maps claims that is a 4hr drive to Mena, AR from my house.

LOTS of pictures here: http://www.jacobsatvadventures.com/w..._gag_pics.html

Trail picture: http://www.wolfpenatv.com/images/wolfpen-trails2010.jpg

Sleeping Accommodations: We will be camping there for two nights, so plan accordingly. Here is the cost:

• $22.00 per day with electricity per 3 adults (addl. Tent $13.20 per day)
• Extra adults $5.00 per day
• All prices include sales tax

Other Information:

• Wolfpen Gap ATV Trail system is approximately 50 miles of trail loops located in the Ouachita National Forest.
• Trail difficulty ranges from easy to most difficult. Riders beware: Trails marked most difficult are just that (rocky, uneven terrain).
• There are no helmet laws in Arkansas, but we do strongly recommend you wear one. Riders can ride double, but are encouraged to not ride on the more difficult trails.
• Most ATV’s can run all day on one tank of gas, unless you ride to other area outside the Wolfpen trail system.
• The trails are in the middle of the forest, so wildlife can be seen everywhere. Bring your camera!
• Oversized and mud tires are not recommended because of the rocky terrain. Stock tires are best.
• Must have spark arrestor in exhaust. (I think this is a state law)
• Mena/Polk County is a dry county. Log Cabin Liquor is approximately 50 miles from the campground, and is the closest available Arkansas alcohol sales. We allow alcoholic beverages inside the campground at your campsite. Drinking is not allowed on the trails.
• All sites come with a standard charcoal grill. You will need to bring charcoal and lighter fluid. If you don't want to pack those along, they are available for purchase in our store.
• Pets are allowed in the cabins and campsites, but you must clean up after them and they must be kept on a leash.

I will be taking both of the ATVs in my sig (my brother will be riding the Grizzly) with my truck and 18’ trailer. I think SNEAKY will be riding with me, so I might have room for one more person if somebody wanted to go but didn’t want to drive.

I'm going to try to make this as well.

No 450r for me! I'm on a Honda 700xx

2007 GMC Sierra RCSB - It breathes better now and looks better than stock.
2008 Honda 700XX - Doesn't need any mods.

I am going to call this week to reserve a camp site (or two). Can I get an unofficial headcount of those thinking about going? I plan on asking how many people a single campsite can accommodate and go from there.

So far I have about 5 (Me, my brother, Billy, Jeff, and GARS04).

GARS04, I see two ATVS in sig. If you go, will you be going alone or will you have somebody tagging along?

Jeff, I had a brain fart. I thought you were on a 450R, but I guess it is the 700xx that has the independent rear suspension. Have you done anything to it over the last year? When we went up to OK back in October of last year (last time I was in the states) I think all you had was the intake/exhaust/tune.

Ok, called Wolfpen and all 4 of their tent sites (with electricity) are open for Oct 15-17, but she did say that they do go quickly. Tent site B can accommodate up to 3 tents, while the other 3 tent sites can only accommodate a single tent. Therefore, it is more important to determine how many TENTS (opposed to the number of people) we will have. Don't ask me how they determine how one site can accommodate 3 tents vs 1, just going by what the lady on the phone said.

If we have over 3 tents, the other tent sites are easily within walking distance (especially tent site A as you can see on the map)
http://www.wolfpenatv.com/images/CAM...D_LAYOUT_1.JPG

Another option is to go primitive camping. From my understanding of the other maps provided by the Wolfpen site, there are camp grounds scattered throughout the trails. I bet I could easily reserve a whole campsite if we think that would be better, but we would be losing out on some amenities. I know we would be losing electricity and probably showers being within walking distance, but I THINK they still have grills in place. I can call and get more information.

I only need one tent site for me, I don't care if it's electric or not. I have a small 1000 watt generator that will run lights if we need it. I'm in so if you have to pay up front to reserve let me know.

My e-mail is [email protected].

Sending out an email shortly. GARS04, just let me know how many other people are interested in going so I can plan accordingly. As long as we stay at tent sites (i.e. don't upgrade to cabins) then I was just going to pay; it wasn't really a concern.

Just an update:

I have reserved all 4 campsites for October 15-17. One camp site can accommodate 3 tents while the others can only accommodate 1 tent each. We currently have 6 people going and 4 of the tent lots are taken. Each campsite has electricity, a grill, and a picnic table; campsites are also within walking distance to bathrooms and showers.

We have a discussion going via email, so if anybody else is interested and wants to be added to the email list, shoot me a PM.

It's a much cheaper hobby, well after the initial investment.

Cool! I was surprised at how much of the trails we had seen in such a short amount of time... but then again we were always hauling ass except for when we got stuck behind the RZRs.

We can do the weekend. I looked up the parts on Motosport (they have OEM parts breakdowns) and it does show a castle nut with a cotter pin, so I ordered a new tie rod end.

You want to do Saturday and see if we can get more people to go than just us?

My buddy called us on the way back and is wanting to do a day trip, he has a pretty tricked out Raptor 700 - he is going to call this week to set a date for this coming weekend, my wife is out of town this weekend so I can go either day.

BTW- Those are excellent pics.

BY FAR!? I had a good time and would go back, but I think the best place to ride is still Red River Motorcycle Trails

I'll have my pics and video up with in the next couple days. Video editing takes some time.

2007 GMC Sierra RCSB - It breathes better now and looks better than stock.
