supermoto/motard

ive been doin some thinking and some looking, and ive made a decision that if i do end up getting a motorcycle it will be a supermoto/motard. has anyone ridden one or does anyone own one? i still havent ridden one but reviews from some friends that have them love them. i dont know which brand to get though and any input from you guys would be helpful. TIA.

Ya DRZ are sweet, I know a guy who has an 07. He says they are a little under powered but thats easy to fix. really fun bike and super reliable. I've heard to stay away from the race bikes that have been converted to motard for the street cause of the small oil capacity and valve ajustments you would have to constantly do.

I had an 06 DRZSM. I would recommend not getting one. It IS underpowered and it is impossible to fix. Sure you can spend a couple grand on a big bore kit but that's a waste on this bike. I would wait until fuel injection has been out a couple years on dirt bikes and SMs and get something like a 650. After owning several FI bikes, carbs are just done.

If I were you, I would buy a KTM 550 SMR or get a honda or yamaha 450f and convert. This will give you the best power to weight and give you the most fun.

well one thing im worried about is top speed because these bikes arent really known for that and i just was worried that they might not be up to par with speed limits on my daily route.

I was talking to a guy that was selling his; his mods were 3x3 mod, frc carb, k&n, full exhaust, hot cams, and a thiner head gasket. He also put a smaller sprocket on the back. He said his would do right at 120, put down aroud 47hp to the wheel. Stock they will do mid 90's and dyno aroud 35hp. So to who ever said you cant make them fast, you can. Also big bore kits are like 400-500 bucks and thats when they start going real fast.

And you think 120mph and 47hp is fast???? Shit.

I've ridden the DRZ400, and it is slow as shit. Very much like a Ninja 250. And yeah, people ride those on the highways all day, but you'll be running at the high end of the rpm range on the freeway and there'll be a lot of vibration. You'll have a very, very hard time keeping up with group rides on the freeway, and like any streetfighter, there is zero protection from wind/elements.

On a good note, the suspension is soft enough to hop curbs at speed, and wheelies/endos are a breeze.

For commuting at non-highway speeds, I think it'd be a great bike. But to have to buy something and add $1-2k in aftermarket pieces (which will void warranty and not help reliability), I'd rather wait and get a used Super Duke or shit, even a Buell XB9S.

My thoughts.

Ya I think 120 is fast.... for a DIRT BIKE, and 47 hp is a lot for something only weighing around 250lbs. Look at the hp to wieght ratios of 600cc, 100hp and weighs around 400lbs this bike has half the horespower but also has half the weight. And I know what fast is I had a sprayed 04 gsxr 1000. And of course these bikes wont keep up top end on the highway thats not what they were designed to do, lets see the bikes that left you on the highway keep up when the supermoto hits the tight twisties. Thats where they excell.

I race supermoto and I have a Honda CRF450R and I love it. If you plan on riding on the street with your tard then I would go with a KTM 625 SMC, a Husquavarna 610 SMR, or some of the bigger Husabergs. The Huskies and Husabergs will cost a pretty good amount of cash, $8-9K for a new one. You can find used KTM 625 SMCs used for $4-5K. They make pretty good road bikes, they are 6 speeds and have pretty long legs for a motard while remaining fairly light. I would stray away from the DRZ 400s if I were you because my dad has one and it's pretty doggy on power. I would have to do EXTENSIVE motor work to be happy with the power on that bike. The KTM 950 SM has good power but it's so heavy I consider it more of a street fighter than a motard. I would never jump one and would not really want to drop 3 gears at 90mph and slip the rear end out to full lock, there's just too much weight moving around, it's basically a naked sportbike.

If you plan on racing though, it's a WHOLE different ballgame. All of the above mentioned bikes suck really bad on the track and you will not even be remotely competitive. Good track bikes are: Honda CRF250 & 450, Yamaha YZF 250 & 450, Suzuki RMZ 250 & 450, Kawasaki KXF 250 & 450, KTM 450, 525, and 560 SMRs, and the expensive Huskies and Bergs. The best bang for your buck on track bikes are the KTM SMRs. They are competitive out of the box. The guy that I bought my Honda from spent $11K building it, and it's no faster than the stock $6500 KTMs.

So there are a lot of options depending on how you are going to ride. Motards are the only way to go. I have had a lot of sportbikes, but since I have started riding motards, I could care less about sportbikes. Go to the track with your buddies on their Gixxers and spank them all over the place on your 450cc bike. It's a blast! Also when you crash, you pick it up and keep rollin. No busted fairings, rearsets, clipons, all that crap. You have to trash a motard pretty good to make it unrideable.

PM me if you want to talk about any of that, I don't mind. I'm totally obsessed with motards and I can try to help you with any questions you have.

KTM KTM KTM

the 625smc bikes are great for streeting because they have the LC4 motor, not the RFS (racing) motor.

The 950 is badass, but too big to really be a 'tard' per se. It's an incredibly balanced standard bike that will be as fast (or faster) than anybody's repli-racer on canyon-carving.

Another good bike is the DUKE II.

my roommate craizie seems to have some sort of issue with these bikes being roadworthy. we cant all be fancy pants R1 riders like him, and these bikes look fun. what kinda gas mileage would i expect out of a bike like this? he thinks its impractical, and i just wanna clear up some stuff about these before i get to thinking about buying one.

First of all I think these bikes are bad ass. However I wouldnt want one as a daily rider. He said his friends would do 90 all day long but have trouble hitting 100 so that says to me the bike is almost wrapped out in the rpms. Ive ridden almost everyday for 2 years now and would NOT want to be on a high way where I could easily get out of someones way with a flick of the wrist.

well i dont know what made you number one think i would use it as a daily rider seeing as how i have a car that works, and two think i would ride it on the highway. i could do either if i had to, and i didnt say it would be the best choice for either, just that it would be a fun bike and that i wanted one.

I've never ridden a motard but I would LOVE to ride a HOT motard around town and be able to take it to tracks and race. Motards are a different kind of fast.

You can take some motards on the highway no problem, the big bore KTMs, Bergs, and Huskies. The DRZ400s will go that fast, but not very happily. If you convert an MX bike to street, a: don't do it, b: if you do, don't ride it on the highway at constant speed much. They tend to trash motors that way. If you plan on racing, make sure you have health insurance, there will be some hospital visits .
