Very proud R1 owner here......

Me and my best friends dad finally got to race after a couple of months of smack talk about our bikes. He's been riding since before I was born so I know he's got some skill, but like any racer I kept on talking.

What bikes you ask?!

My 2004 Yamaha R1 - only performance mod is a front sprocket (FYI - Yamaha went with a 17 tooth in 2004 so I just dropped it down to the stock 2003 and previous size of 16 tooth)

against a stock 2004 Kawasaki ZX12

We hit the gas and he got the jump on me. We were neck and neck until I shifted into 4th gear and I passed his ass!!!!

Surprised the shit out of both of us. I thought it would have been much closer, but I had no idea that I would be clearly in front and putting lengths on it. Pretty cool. Now I want some of the ZX10.

Anytime. I have yet to be beat on the highway if I don't miss a gear. I am not trying to be cocky. I just know this bike is fast. She put down 157RWHP with just a slip on. I ride for fun so if we race it doesn't matter who wins or loses. I have an 02 R1 and love it. I would probably get rid of my ZX10 before I would my R1.

Cool. Maybe we can get together sometime and check em out. I've ridden a 10 and the 12 and they are both wicked. I still need to dyno the R1.

04 R1's are fast as crap. I'd say it would be a good race on the highway with mod for mod and close to the same weight.

I understand that your friend is experienced w/ more skill. I don't understand, however, why you correlate that to who will win a roll-on drag race. The most difficult part of drag racing is launching properly.

How much do you weigh and how much does he weigh?

"From a roll" is not a drag race. I didn't say it was from a "roll". We are pretty much the same weight. I'm 6'4" and 215 lbs and he's about 6'1" and about the same weight.

My brother Rich says he knows you. He has a 10 as well. He says you don't live that far from him and he will race you. Me and him are pretty close on the highway. I usually pull a little better top end since I have a slip-on. He is 100% stock. He has a sprocket and strap for the track but right now he has stock sprocket on. Of course I am willing to race anytime as well.

I said I would never buy another one but.....

This fucking gas bill is killing me to drive my Jeep to work 6 days a week. I have a couple jet ski's I've planned on keeping through the summer but I'm starting to think it would be a better idea to unload those gas suckers and spend the money on a bike. The drive to work isn't all that far but it costs me about $60 a week in fuel alone, not to mention the mud tires I put on the Jeep don't last too many miles.

<----- May be another ZX10R owner.

1 down on '01 R6 too much/too little?

I am going to get a chain and spocket and want to change it up a little. I was thinking about just going down 1 in the front. I don't want to go too drastic so I was thinking this would be good... anyone have experience with trying different combos?

I believe -1 up front is equivalent to +3 in the back. To answer your question it is not that drastic but noticable. If your looking for just a little more acceleration but maintaining good driveability down the interstate then its the way to go.

I like to increase the sprocket size in the back, esp on the small bikes like yours. The front sprocket is very small as is, and everytime you take a tooth off you reduce the circumference of the circle, making it harder and harder for a 530 to make that turn, esp on a chain that hasnt been oiled. Smaller fronts wear chains faster and more often break than stockers because of the turn radius. I keep a 17 on the front of the busa, but have used 16 and seen it chop up the chain slider on my arm.....your prob starting with a 15 or something up front right??

the plan is to go to a 520 chain will that be better for the one down in front. the reason I was thinking one down in the front is because i found the "kit" with a 520 chain. front and rear spocket
