Intel

In his words:

Powell said, "I would expect to travel to Syria to have very candid and straightforward discussions with my foreign minister colleague (Farouk al-Sharaa) and with President Bashar Assad."

al is sort of like "the".

bin (or ibn) means son. Osama bin Laden, Osama means "well-wisher" (most misnamed person on earth) so its "Well-wisher, son of Laden".

abu means father. Abu Qurban -> father of Qurban

umm/bint mean mother and daughter, used the same as above.

abdul means servant of as in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar -> means Kareem (Generous/Noble) Servant Of The Mighty.

Why? Because I have more than a superficial understanding/knowledge of the middle east?

Cool.

My wife was born in England, lived in Qatar and Oman growing up (her dad worked for Gulf Oil). Her grandmother is Palestinian (living in London for most of her life). Thus my children have some middle eastern decent in them. Her grandmother is a Palestinian Christian, not a muslim (yes there are some Christians in the middle east, actually born there as well!).

Which is why I've become very interested in the Middle East over the past 10 years or so.

I'd like to sound a little intelligent when I tell my daughters of their heritage (which they get Hungarian from myself and Estonian, English and Palestinian from my wife.)

He went ostensibly to deliver a serious, private directive of how we expect the Syrians to cooperate.... or else.

However, from my experiences, we SHOULD have sent a relatively junior member of the State Department (if you can find one who isn't at least a little pink) to have a "frank discussion" with the eye doctor dictator...

Sending our most senior diplomat tends to create the perception that we consider the Syrian government a legitimate negotiating partner...

Thus, I believe Secretary Powel went BECAUSE we couldn't find any careerist State Department personnel that we could TRUST not to sell us out...
