Big brother at 24 hour fitness

/tin foil hat on

24 hour fitness now has finger print scanners to access their workout clubs. Now big brother knows when you are getting your sweat on.

I saw that a couple weeks ago on drudgereport. It all starts by seemingly innocent incremental baby steps. Your servitude will be brought to you and excepted by most under the guise of convenience and safety.

LA fitness doesn't use that!

Just got back from working out there this morning and saw that.

They won't get my fingerprints, I don't give a shit what they do. But, I highly suspect that the reason they are doing this is so that people don't need to have a card. I just don't trust them to keep the data secure.

they are using finger print scanners at Disney World as well. We had to have our finger prints scanned to enter the park each day.

All men should know Honor first, above all else!

Honor is not holding your hand out for something you did not earn.
Honor is not forcing your ideas, or belief on others.
Honor is not something given to you by way of job, or title.

Honor is learned, earned, practiced and respected by all decent men and women.

X2. Their ID's don't have photos on there, they usually add a black and white photo copy of your DL in the little card holder. I'm sure tons of people share ID's, how hard is it to put your DL picture on someone elses ID? Especially when it's a low resolution B&W scan.

There's nothing in my membership about finger scanning, they can blow me.

That's very strange, but hey it's Disney. What else would you expect from weirdos that put a picture of a golden penis on a children's movie cover?

They started that for season ticket holders, is it for everyone now? You guys worried about 24 hour do realize that they keep a log every time you check in right? Whats the difference if you use a card that gets scanned or your fingerprint? With the print at least I won't have to stand in line while the new girl IDs everyone.

everyone. In order for anyone to get in you had to go thru a booth and present your right finger and have it scanned twice- once accepted you were allowed to pass thru.

I got $100 that says this information is sent back to the government, for "insurance research" purposes.

I'm not convinced that it is right now. My problem is that once the database exists then it becomes an enticing target for someone who needs it. I don't really care to chance it when there is nothing in it for me. Now, if 24 hour fitness would like to lower my dues since it makes it easier for them to stop unauthorized people from using their club, I'd consider it.

According to 24 hour fitness website, the fingerprinting is not mandatory:

Quote:
What if I don't want to participate in this new way of checking in?

Weíre making changes to all of our computer systems, so youíll no longer be able to check in with your old membership card. If you donít want to enroll, youíll need to bring your driverís license or another government or school issued ID each time you check in.
more info here

I always forget my ID card and check in with my DL anyway. No fingerprints for me.

I'm sure they will get sued.

Maybe so. But I don't know how much water any suit would hold if they are offering an alternative unless someone can prove that they are misrepresenting what they are collecting or how they are using the data.

I found this old article from 2007: Know the legalities of biometrics

From a European/world perspective, with some references to US case law, there's this publication from 2008: opens a PDF: Identifying Legal Concerns in the Biometric Context

I don't know why I found this quote funny, but I did:

While still controversial within the scientific community, several researchers have reported a link between fingerprints and homosexuality. (Cytowix, R.E. 1996)

It is optional, and I've politely declined each time I've been asked. Usually that's all it takes, one guy was kinda pushy, saying that they don't actually take your fingerprint, just three points which they triangulate. I still said no, I stand nothing to gain from it.

I did it since my fingerprints are in a bunch of databases all over the place anyways. I've done and continue to do a lot of work for big brother. Hell, I'll trust a PCI compliant 24 hour fitness over a government organization that is hit or miss on anything.

I understand some folks reservations on it, just my preference to use it.

What are you talking about? I don't see a problem with it. What is someone going to do with my finger print? I am guessing not a whole lot. They have your DL information already which has your address and all that jazz on it. I guess I don't walk around with a tin foil hat on either.
