Culture Crisis and not Healthcare Crisis...

Got this from a friend's wall on Facebook...ER physician's letter to the POtuS.

Dear Mr. President:
During my shift in the Emergency Room last night, I had the pleasure of evaluating a patient whose smile revealed an expensive shiny gold tooth, whose body was adorned with a wide assortment of elaborate and costly tattoos, who wore a very expensive brand of tennis shoes and who chatted on a new cellular telephone equipped with a popular R&B ringtone.

While glancing over her patient chart, I happened to notice that her payer status was listed as "Medicaid"! During my examination of her, the patient informed me that she smokes more than one pack of cigarettes every day, eats only at fast-food take-outs, and somehow still has money to buy pretzels and beer. And, you and our Congress expect me to pay for this woman's health care? I contend that our nation's "health care crisis" is not the result of a shortage of quality hospitals, doctors or nurses. Rather, it is the result of a "crisis of culture" a culture in which it is perfectly acceptable to spend money on luxuries and vices while refusing to take care of one's self or, heaven forbid, purchase health insurance. It is a culture based in the irresponsible credo that "I can do whatever I want to because someone else will always take care of me". Once you fix this "culture crisis" that rewards irresponsibility and dependency, you'll be amazed at how quickly our nation's health care difficulties will disappear.

Respectfully,
ROGER STARNER JONES, MD

Nail on the head.

I believe alot of it, with that demographic, stems from slave culture. Do just enough work so you dont get your ass beat.

lol at the slave comment. I would have to say that particular example comes from the hip/hop world. That was basically a dead on physical description for 99% of the hip/hop folks on TV.

To be honest, now that I look at it that was a lot more racist sounding than I intended it to be. I really did want to emphasize that perhaps there is a strong cultural factor that deeply influences that behavior and attitude. I make an effort on this board to abstain from racism.

You think the slave comment is racist? What about FACT!

The government is using "policy" to enslave everyone to their state run plans. It isn't a racist comment. They want everyone covered under their plan.... It is slavery. It's also communism and it's about time you people wake the F up.

The gov't wants everyone sucking the corn sugar piss they call milk from their saggy ass broke tit. If that isn't slavery, then please pray tell what is?

I have to formally apologize where I labeled you an obama supporting liberal in another thread, I was truly thinking of someone else it seems. The rest of my post in that thread stands though.

Even if you put it in as benign a way as your follow up, it's still considered racism in the black community. They tend to spend a lot more time looking outward at others than at themselves to fix inner city problems.

I see this bullshit every single day at work like Dr.Dave. It pisses me off to see people taking every handout that they can and contributing nothing to society. Im not sure as to this being a cultural thing, it's more of a 'worthless assholes' thing. Black, white, hispanic, it doesnt matter.

The other day I had a young girl ask me how long it would take to run a pregnancy test. I told her the test itself doesnt take long, but that was not an emergency and would not need to be seen at our emergency room. I suggested going to a dollar store or grocery store and picking up a test if she was worried. I explained that a hospital visit is very expensive and it would be to her best benefit to do one herself. She said "its ok...I have medicaid" and proceeded to check in.

You sure about that, Watson?

DNA studies do not indicate that separate classifiable subspecies (races) exist within modern humans. While different genes for physical traits such as skin and hair color can be identified between individuals, no consistent patterns of genes across the human genome exist to distinguish one race from another. There also is no genetic basis for divisions of human ethnicity. People who have lived in the same geographic region for many generations may have some alleles in common, but no allele will be found in all members of one population and in no members of any other. Indeed, it has been proven that there is more genetic variation within races than exists between them.

Out of curiosity, what was this individual's out of pocket expense for the ER visit? I don't have Medicaid, so I don't have any idea how that works.

I know I have good (or maybe just decent?) insurance and an ER visit is $50 out of pocket + 10% of the total cost. My feeling is that an ER pregnancy test would end up costing me $75-$100 in the end.

Slave culture? Is there any Black-Americans that have ever been a slave? That's BS, IMO.

My wife, as a nurse, sees this culture crisis too but in another way. People that come in complaining about all kinds of problems. She suggests that they loose a couple hundred pounds to help their back pain, knee pains, high BP or the ailments and she gets, "don't tell me how to live, give me a pill."

Then you're using the word, "genetics," wrong. "Heredity," would suit the discussion better, but would still be inapplicable, because again, the issue is one of culture, not heritable traits.

You are implying that it couldnt be passed down a few generations. Hell, ever driven through Louisiana? Black people live there who have not uprooted for several generations. You can see a plantation house, with shacks adjacent to it with blacks sitting on porches. I can honestly say that my drive through Louisiana was one of the most surreal things I have ever done/seen.

That's still an anthropological curiosity, because we're talking about behaviors that have been passed down, not alleles.

I agree, I have agreed with you since the inception of your genetics/anthropology argument.

I do not believe that laziness or any mindset is genetic, each can be passed down to the next generation both passively and actively. Score one for nurture I guess.
