3rd world America: Detroit - documentary

A couple years ago I stumbled across some pictures of all the "ruins" of Detroit on an urban exploration website.

I've been interested in pics/sites/videos about Detroit ever since.

It seems like Baltimore and Memphis aren't far behind either.

At one point over 2 million people lived in Detroit and it was the nations 4th largest city. Now much of it looks like a warzone with only 800K citizens left.

This is a pretty good documentary out out by the BBC.

I don't have an hour to spare right now, but I'm interested in this too. I think you could see this happening to other cities as industries get shipped out.

It's not already? Sure looked like a war zone when I was there 8-10 months ago.

Reminds me a lot of fallout 3.

A pity but I find myself thinking "so what"? Every civilization has towns and cities that it eventually moves on from. So its a modern day ghost town. There must be a reason that people don't want to live there anymore, and its not like they all died. They just moved somewhere else. I don't think its some great loss, other than the buildings themselves. Thats a shame, it would be nice if they all could have been turned into historic building museums or something.

That first one kinda made me sad, i can almost see this happening all over the country as more and more people are put out of work. Pisses me off so bad

The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was.

Absolutely!!! The UAW raised the price to do business by inflating employee salaries and benefits to the point that the Automakers had to either move from Detroit where the UAW had no jurisdiction or collapse (see Packard and Studebaker).

All the while, the UAW still has inflated employee pay and benefits above 200% actual market value while wasting the money Auto Workers have to pay them in dues on such things as AUTO RACING SPONSORSHIPS!!!

There was a fire there yesterday or Wednesday that was fueled by some high winds. Destroyed 85 homes. People were blaming the FD which is understaffed saying it took up to 90 minutes for response.
