N.Korea warns of war if South retaliates over ship
20 May 2010 01:50:58 GMT

Source: Reuters

SEOUL, May 20 (Reuters) - North Korea said on Thursday it would take strong measures, including war, if the South imposes sanctions after accusing it of sinking a navy ship, Yonhap news agency said.

The North's National Defence Commission said in a statement carried on its state radio, and monitored by Yonhap, that the South's findings blaming it for the sinking of the navy corvette were a fabrication. (Reporting by Jack Kim, editing by Jonathan Thatcher)

And the response from the White House:

RAW — Statement by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs on North Korean naval attack
Thursday, May 20th, 2010 at 2:18 am

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — The following is a statement by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs on a North Korean naval attack in late March, which killed 46 South Korean sailors.

“The President has expressed his deep sympathy to President Lee and the Korean people for the loss of 46 sailors on the Republic of Korea Navy ship Cheonan that was sunk on March 26 by a torpedo. The United States strongly condemns the act of aggression that led to their deaths.

The report issued today by the team of international investigators reflects an objective and scientific review of the evidence. It points overwhelmingly to the conclusion that North Korea was responsible for this attack. This act of aggression is one more instance of North Korea’s unacceptable behavior and defiance of international law. This attack constitutes a challenge to international peace and security and is a violation of the Armistice Agreement.

The President spoke with President Lee on May 17 and made clear that the United States fully supports the Republic of Korea, both in the effort to secure justice for the 46 service members killed in this attack and in its defense against further acts of aggression.

North Korea must understand that belligerence towards its neighbors and defiance of the international community are signs of weakness, not strength. Such unacceptable behavior only deepens North Korea’s isolation. It reinforces the resolve of its neighbors to intensify their cooperation to safeguard peace and stability in the region against all provocations.”

Yeah what the fuck are they going to do? No one thinks so but they are weak. Rather, they are in a weak position. They will do a whole lot of complaining, that's what they'll do. They stay right on the verge of revolution all the time. All they would need for their government to topple is an actual conflict. And they don't want to lose the good relationships that they have, they enjoy too much from them.

Funny how they didn't have the balls to do shit like this when Bush was in office. I wonder why?

Underscoring the concern, U.S. officials have refused to call the North's attack on the ship an act of war or state-sponsored terror, warning that an overreaction could cause the Korean peninsula to "explode." They said they would explore diplomatic steps through the U.N. or increase Washington's unilateral sanctions against North Korea's Soviet-style state.
We are not going to do a damn thing. That being said, there is a good chance it will escalate on it's own, and war break out. When that happens, Seoul will burn along with the 30,000 or so American troops that are stationed there. Even then, I doubt obama/clinton/pelosi/ried will do anything except call for more sanctions.

Whiteman AFB in Missouri has the B-2s and rotates them through other bases like the one in Diego Garcia and Andersen in Guam. Between South Korea and Japan we have plenty of fighters in the region.

Nothing will happen, our POTUS is a chicken shit. Its crazy though, because if you fire upon another countries ship, thats an act of war anyhow. How many times are they going to do it before anyone fires back at them?

All men should know Honor first, above all else!

Honor is not holding your hand out for something you did not earn.
Honor is not forcing your ideas, or belief on others.
Honor is not something given to you by way of job, or title.

Honor is learned, earned, practiced and respected by all decent men and women.

yes, and lose south korea as one of our biggest trade partners would work out great. Also giving all their wealth and resources to a mad despot leading a police state would also be a great idea.

The notion of letting the world fight out its problems because it doesn't affect us is naive at best and dangerous at worst.

It's the united states projections of power overseas that have created the stability needed for international trade and open sea lanes.

While I agree that we shouldn't police the world, when you let small conflicts drag on they tend to escalate and drag in other countries in the region. How long do you think it would take before North Korea attacked Japan if it managed to take over South Korea? The answer is not long. Before you know it, you got a nice sized war on your hands involving half the world.

What's easier, fighting that war when we HAVE to, with millions of men or policing the world when we don't have to?

And our military isn't "spread thin". That's a load of bullshit.

once again, the wealth of our nation and the broad expansion of international trade which has fueled our nation's explosive growth in the 20th century was brought on by the heavy policing of the world by first the british royal navy and then our own projections of power.

Each region which we have had long term military commitments has been quite stable and prosperous over the years. Turkey, for example, has long been one of the better examples of a middle east country. South Korea has had great strides in technology and automotive industry. Japan recovered from WWII and became an incredibly important trade and defense partner.

Whether we like it or not, it HAS become our place to become world police.

There is a Mutual Defense Treaty (1953) in effect so that if Korea is attacked the United States is obligated to come to Korea's aid.

I don't know if this codifies as an attack, I'm sure technically a rifle shot fired across the DMZ would be as well - but diplomacy is supposed to fill that gap short of tanks rolling down across the border.

A measured response is certainly within South Korea's right, but with NK's nuclear capability (technically still unconfirmed - yet plausible) that is a dangerous path to travel. A single container ship with a nuclear device sitting in Busan harbor would have quite an immediate effect.

That then begs the question - would setting off nuke in South Korea get a US ICBM launched into NK? Doubtful. Maybe a few cruise missles. China is still backing NK so if anything comes to serious blows in a NK/SK fight - it'll proxy into a China/US fight - and going nuclear will just make everything so far look like shooting BB's at a tin can in your backyard.

North Korea to Sever Ties With the South

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...070314374.html

SEOULóNorth Korea said Tuesday it will cut off all ties to South Korea, going well beyond the penalties that Seoul imposed on it a day earlier for its apparent role in the sinking of a South Korean warship two months ago.

North Korea's state news agency announced the move late Tuesday, well after the usual hours when it makes statements from the country's authoritarian government.

The decision sharply escalates the tensions between the two countries in the aftermath of the March 26 sinking of South Korea's Cheonan warship.

North Korea said it would expel all South Koreans from a joint industrial complex just inside the North where about 120 South Korean companies employ about 40,000 North Koreans.

Hopefully. If you're wrong though we'll have 10k+ casualties the first week.

I think that we surely have a contingency plan for a massive ground invasion from the north. Is the DMZ mined? If not I bet it would be in short order if the north made a move.

The major threat isn't an actual ground invasion, it is the massive amount of artillery that is currently aimed at Seoul. The 10 million + people in Seoul are sitting ducks.

I just wonder what 'curious george' in the white house plans to do when S Korea has 1 million casualties in the first 24 hours.

if the shit hits the fan little pencil dick will totally fuck up some stuff with rockets and missiles. but it will be his only strike and most likely the last. this has to happen sooner or later. the north is having a hard time keeping their people ignorant to the world around them. his little ass is sweating a racing stripe in his panties . i think china has had about enough. nk is a liability to them not an asset.

Well that is interesting. I would have hammered that artillery the minute they said they were withdrawing from the peace agreement last year.

i believe ive read that the dmz is the most heavily mined area in the world, they have had 50+ years to setup after all!

The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was.

It's also a mountain range and full of rivers. Also, it's one of the coldest places on the planet when winter hits.
