I would not suspend the students, I would place them in an alternative setting for that day, meet with the parents and come to an agreement, even if that was an agree to disagree conclusion. Now on the other hand if I had a group of students who periodically wore the American flag shirts then I would support them wearing the shirts on any day but if they only choose to wear them on foreign holidays, I would once again place the safety of my school and kids over their protest ideal.
I hear where you coming from buy strongly disagree. I would never penalize my kids or be docile if they were punished for showing country pride. This is the US, not anywhere else. As you know, when in other countries you respect THEIR ways and culture. Here in the US, I could not care less what day it is - people can show patriotism. I don't care if it is was a way to protest. This is America...
1. The whole freedom of speech thing.
2. The whole freedom thing (that allows Americans in general to have to endure a lot of disrespect to Old Glory to begin with.
3. It is never an inappropriate time to show the colors....in America.
I understand not wanting disruptions, but I'm sick and tired of Americans enduring the punishment as opposed to keeping other cultures that are IN America in line.
i.e. You never hear of Mexicans/Muslims...etc being suspended reprimanded for disrespecting America/Americans on Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and any other day that is for us. I'm not saying it does happen a lot, but I feel confident that these days it would be a big whoopy if a Muslim/Mexican was suspended for the same behavior. It would be racist, and everything else. Damned shit is pissing me off these days.
