Obama to build nuclear power plants

The Obama administration on Tuesday announced a loan guarantee for the first new nuclear reactor to be built in the US in decades--part of a planned $54.5 billion program to kickstart a nuclear revival using government-backed loans. Yet Chu said he was not aware of a Congressional Budget Office study showing that the chances of default on these loans are "very high--well above 50 percent."

I have no problem with nuclear energy. The govt should just let capitalism run its course by removing alot of the erroneous restrictions placed on the industry so private capital will want to move in.

His approach is just a band aid.

I'll believe it when the first reactor is fired up. Until then I think it is fucking lip service to improve his approval ratings. His record on votes for nuclear power is horrific from what I have read.

look at it this way, building a nuclear power plant means the government will be in competition with the power companies, its not fair to those companies. it will in effect socialize the energy business.

You don't know how right you are.

Where is the waste going to go?

He shut down the waste fill site. According to the neo-con Hannidy.

The waste should be accumulated in the Nevada desert until it becomes economically feasible to fire it into the sun or off into deep space. But hey don't listen to me, I'm just a crazy old white fuck.

Or this.

I personally prefer my idea, but I'm flexible on the subject.

Al's idea would be totally kickass if you look at it in terms of what better way to say "what's up mother fucker" to any other life forms we eventually discover...

Up to 95% of the waste in storage is reusable with 20+ year old technology, that GE was working on, until Clinton's Energy adviser had the contract canceled to promote natural gas... including large contracts to her last private employer.

Watch out now! The EPA and UN will be all over us for polluting deep space and causing cancer and diseases to other life forms.

This..

I think Obama "might" be finally listening to his EPA head. That guy has been advocating nuclear reactors as a "realistic" way to reduce CO^2 emissions.

I would also like to see them put a lot more investment in new reactor technology. Thorium fueled reactors look like something worth investigating more. Of course there is also fusion technology but I think that is further down the road.
