Question Haiti earthquake relief: Should it come from the US government?

An easy question: Should the US relief money come from the federal government (taxes), or only from US organizations where money comes from donations (ie. Red Cross, Religious Organizations)?

No federal money. Ample relief can be provided through the private sector. Didn't half of the billions that went to the sunami victims come from private donations?

there are some "charities" making a mint on this disaster. now they're making it to where you can donate via your cell phone by sending a text message, and the best that i've heard of so far is giving 91% of the funds to the relief effort. think about that...they're getting (according to news reports) as much as $400k per day and keeping $36k of that per day! that's a great business to be in!

Nope. After hearing Obama I sincerely think he is trying to overdue it, just to look like a savior.

Given that I pay around 33% in taxes give or take (not counting gas and sales tax.... ) crap make that 40% or more.....

HELL NO.

Until you can pave the damn roads in my neighborhood, repair the water mains, pick the damn trash on time, prevent the theft in the neighborhood, then HELL NO.

Our government is wasting all my money and I'm getting shitty services for it.

If I got service this shitty at any restaurant I wouldn't pay the bill much less give a tip.

Start thinking like a consumer. What do you get for your tax dollar? You get your buddies and guys you went to school with coming back home with shrapnel in their asses trying to provide democracy to those that don't understand or want it, while you are being subjected to ever growing communist and socialist ideas at home..... add to that they can't even pave the fucking roads and keep the water clean.

Over 3 billion in aid has been given to Haiti since the Clinton era. Where the heck has it gone?

The people of Haiti are following the blue print of the former citizens of New Orleans. Just start looting...

They won't be getting a penny from me (well, not directly anyway)

Ultimately, relying on private donations would make any concerted relief effort problematic at best. Should we be donating as individuals? Sure. Without miltary/UN infrastructure in place to make use of it, money is worthless in this situation.

My very good family friend is Michael Goble, the first UN official they interview:

Email from Michael:

Oh man oh man oh man.....friggin' nightmare.....so completely unfair for these poor people. Not that Mother Nature discriminates....politicians, wealthy expats, and top officials Haitian and UN alike are*falling left and right.* Yesterday I had the unique experience of helping create a "privacy barrier"*just outside the make-shift/temporary "morgue" (i.e., a*refrigerated 20'x8'x8' sea container)*so that*colleagues could identify the bodies of our top 3 UN officials here -- Police Commissioner, Special Rep. to the Sec'y General, and Deputy Special Rep to S.G. (essentially ambassador level posts).....this delightful process involves unzipping the body bags and photographing the remains while making written notes re clothing, clothing labels, jewelry/watch/tie -- basically anything that confirms who the person is since after 4 days of being dead they're not exactly recognizable in the traditional way.....you can imagine the grizzly details, I'm sure.* How lucky am I:* my office ("Cargo Processing*Unit") *is smack dab between the triage/trauma tent (formerly my cargo warehouse) and the above-mentioned "morgue" (formerly where we stored Ration Packs before distributing to the UN troops out in the regions).....you'd have to laugh right along with me when people stick their head in my office (which is just a pre-fab metal office*container itself....like those temp offices you see at construction sites)*to ask for medical advice/assistance!!*
*
*
I'm fine, and totally intend to remain that way!, and like you, wish there was a way to help even more, in big picture way......
*
On that note....and I swear I began this email with a 2-minute reply in mind (!?!).... and on much lighter note, you'll never guess who I met and chatted with this afternoon in "my" Cargo Warehouse - cum - Triage Tent ..... give up?? .... Mr. Fox News Geraldo Rivera -- kid you not,
*
' 70s porn-star moustache and all!!!* Is that not bizarre and hilarious and who knows what just all at once?!!?!??

Well, I live in Montreal where we have an overwhelming Haitian community. Don't get me wrong, and don't call me a racist, but I don't fucking like Haitians. I must say I've got friends from nearly every other Caribbean Island, I have yet to meet a trustworthy Haitian! I do not wish death upon anyone, and what is going on there is truly sad.

That being said, I do not want my damned tax dollars going to help a nation that is completely unable to make any sort of gains with all the help they HAVE been receiving for the past God-knows-how-many-years!! It pisses me off that this place is still the poorest nation in our hemisphere, the idiots immigrate to Canada, proceed to think that just because they speak some retarded version of French they are somehow superior to us Anglophones, they migrate like rats into certain areas and then blow up with crime. Every Haitian infested area in Montreal is a den of crime, it's ridiculous! Most of them take advantage of the system, and are unbearingly ghetto. I saw this big booty hoe earlier this summer, walking down my street, with high heels on, short skirt, fake hair fake nails fake eyes too, pushing a stroller with not one child but TWO. And no, they weren't twins. Now they're talking about bringing MORE of them here!!!!!!!!! I just cant handle it, I'm moving to Arizona to hang out with some Messicans.
