Upside down flag in Garland

I normally don't post in this forum, but I was surprised when I saw no one post this story. Is this really the correct way to protest?

Upside-Down Flag Protest Draws Flack From Neighbors
By FRANK HEINZ

In Garland, a homeowner is catching a lot of flack for hanging his American flag upside down in protest of the U.S. government.

"I put my life on the line so you could disagree with me, but not spit in my face like that," said neighbor and Vietnam war veteran Miguel Rodriguez. "When you do that, you're offending me, as a veteran."

Rodriguez said his daughter and 10-year-old grandson found the inverted flag very offensive as well, though not all neighbors are angry with the protest.

Two doors down, Kathy Faz chooses to hang her flag correctly, but says she can understand the homeowner's resentment.

"I think it's his right to protest, I really do," said Kathy Faz. "There are a lot of things that our government is not listening to."

The homeowner who is flying the flag upside down was not able to be reached for comment, but had a large note taped to his door that said the following:

"I am not protesting America. I am protesting Congress. This house has 24 years with U.S. Navy and believes our nation is in distress. It is not disgracing the flag. The commander-in-chief is disgracing our troops. Do not ask me to turn it over or you will be escorted off my property. All others are welcome."

"Whatever you're disagreeing about, Obama or Congress, that's what he has on his door, that's your fight. Not the flag," said Rodriguez.

For some reason I can deal with that a little better as opposed to burning the flag. It bothers me like crazy, but I keep my mouth shut. I find it disrespectful. They are pissing of people, not the government.

I think sean88gt does it in his avatar. Like I said, it only pisses off those that would probably otherwise agree with the person.

I support his right to do it. It's not disgracing the flag, this nation IS under distress.

Point well made.

Edit: I still don't like it, but it certainly is not burning the flag or other things.

I am a little on the fence about it. I know this country needs a wake up call and major changes. I just don't know that we should use an important symbol of our country to show our distain for our government. It sends a message of weakness to our enemies in my opinion. A crack in the pride of our country for all the world to see.

It's not showing weakness. It's showing concern. It IS a valid way to display the flag according to regulations

Ya'll are all missing the point here. The note on his door says he's a 24 year veteran of the Navy. International Maritime Distress Signal guidelines call for displaying a National flag upside when your ship is in distress. He's just trying to convey his meaning in a way that he understands, and is apparently hoping that others will too. Guess you need to be swabby to get it.

You may not think it's a sign of weakness, but I know other countries will. They would love to see American's divided. Divide and conquer.

You know, I have been thinking about this for a while. And a scary thought keeps popping into my mind. My generation, 27 right now, could possibly end up not even living in a country called The United States of America.

I don't think that is completely too far fetched. It is scary as shit, but I really think it could happen in my lifetime. I am going to have to sit my son down and explain to him how a country called The United States of America, how great it was, how free you were and able to live the life you wanted. And my son would look at me crazy.

Hell I have even sat down and wondered what would cause another civil war, and at the moment, anything is possible.

True, but why give them any more fuel for the fire. I dunno, I guess, in the end, any protest to our government would be looked upon as us weakening, no matter how the protest is done.

Do you think there could be an actual all out civil war in this country? Literally guns loaded and lines drawn in the sand?

Not a civil war, there will be no war amidst the people. It would be a war against the Government...i.e. troops vs militias

Secede!!

We have our own power grid and have oil in the gulf...lets kick this party!

Well, to me, that is a civil war. Secession is what I fully expect to see one day in this country. I just don't know what state will be the first to try it.

That's easy it would definitely be texas that started it. The flag thing doesn't bother me either as I also believe the countr is in distress.

Exactly. It's been the other way around for way too long.

Our government needs our help, they have an addiction. Our government is addicted to our money. Since they always have our best interest at heart it's time we return the favor. We need to have an intervention, for the governments own good of course. It's just irresponsible for us to let people with a known money addiction continue to handle our money. Lets have an intervention now so we can help these sick individuals.

Why not go do something about it? Set the example? Show us how it is done? Maybe grenade some government buildings or something.

Until you do that, you're just spouting off. Which is fine, but it is what it is. It's gonna hafta get a whole lot worst before any mass amount of people will march around with you blowing stuff up.

Until that point, I'm sticking with what I do. Supporting organizations with a bigger voice then me....yadda...yadda. Pissing in the wind at this point. If our population can't support measures against *illegal* immigration, it's probably even worst then just hating our government.

+1 !
i also agree with "our gov. should fear the people again"
there's no reason we should fear THEM !! but thats what has been happening along with rich people using money for power.. u notice none of the richest people are worried or protesting any thing ..thats cuz they are content on how things are and how they are going !!

my flag has only been out a couple days since January. I put it out for Veterans days and other days to honor our troops. I used to fly it almost all the time, been thinking about keeping the Texas flag out instead!

Blowing stuff up, and violence towards the government is in no way shape or form what I'm advocating. I'm not trying to get the masses to do anything except open their eyes. Violent actions will only result in the military being used against you, and much worse things to follow. Violence definitely is NOT the answer.

Well when they jack my taxes up for this health care crap.

I'll change my W2 to 10 dependence, and not file at the end of the year, you know, like the illegals do and get away with it.

And by the way. Did any one read this bill? there is all kinds of gun control in it as well. There is also the part about the feds getting into your accounts.

And I'll be flying this flag.

I would never suggest we just sit there and take it. Ceyko's post was a little ludicrous with his statements. Anyone that insinuates I want to go around with the masses blowing shit up is confused. I just had to make it clear for the MIB's that are reading along with us.

I really like that answer, but unfortunately the beast we face have their hands in pretty much everything. I don't believe we can starve them out with the amount of people that are oblivious to what's really going on. Now if the number of people that are aware drastically increases, then I believe you're right, and that's exactly how you defeat them.

After reading the counter arguments I will still never fly my flag upside down..... unless it gets a shit ton worst or something...combat...etc. Which, by DFWS mentality could happen within the next week or two.

I also probably won't hang out where people/businesses chose to do it (not that I'm a social butterfly anyway and would be hurting a whole bunch of people's feelings) either. In social situations I usually end up drunk and would likely end up getting kicked out anyway or into a fight.

However, I -get it- a little better now and will just hang my head in shame that our country has come to people feeling the need to do that. I understand it, but can't bring myself to support that action quite yet but feel a little less....pissed off about it.
