That plant was built 10 years ago, in 1999.

Believe it or not, China is Buick's best market, more Buicks are sold in China than in the USA, nearly 400,000 per year. All the cars built there are for Chinese consumption, so not a single US job was lost to that plant. It's a very profitable plant.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick#Buick_in_China

So I'd say the Shanghai plant was a good decision, good for GM, and good for the USA.

GM also makes thier first billion payment to the US Government this week, to repay the bailout.

Also to play Devil's Advocate: GM announced today that starting next month they plan on repaying the government 1 billion every 3 months.

They paid the Govt $1 billion, so they actually lost $1 billion. Now they will need another $1 billion to stay afloat.

I need a business model like that.

Not sure how a Buick being built in China is better for the USA then one being built in America.

Still waiting for someone to tell me how a Buick assembled in China, using Chinese labor is better for the USA then one assembled in America using American labor.

Nope. That's still in tact. My "give a shitter" is shot though. It was damaged pretty bad for a while, but then the divorce completely destroyed it.

dont misunderstand my context, i am pissed at the fact that they are considering this, as much as i am that they are using taxpayer money to ship engine assembly operations abroad.

its bullshit.

If they only lost $1,000,000,000 this quarter, that'd be a strong improvement over their position this time last year.

Give me a dollar.

Yeah well, he was asking how it helped, and that was my answer. While it may not be as good as it could be, it's a lot better than nothing.

Also, I could be wrong about this, but I am not entirely sure that this is all GM's fault. Im sure they would get along a whole lot better, if they didn't have the giant blood sucking parasite that is the union on their backs. I really don't understand why they need a union, anyway. Modern laws pretty much ensure that employees are going to be treated decent in the work place. Hell you can be fined for telling an employee to shut up. I like the way that ford sorta downsized it's unions. They went out of their way to automate a bunch more of the process, thereby cutting out the jobs.

They cant afford our labor prices so wouldnt buy them. This is why free trade with china is a joke, they will never buy anything from us at a price where we have to sell it to make a profit.

The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was.

The Messiah is a globalist who believes the United States should do more to improve conditions throughout the world. He wants to remembered as the guy who got the USA to be part of the global community in what he and the extreme far left feel is appropriate. Stimulus money going to other countries make sense in his world.

I just hope 2010 and 2012 correct this problem before it gets way out of hand.

It's plausible. They can just refinance the debt to pay it off.

Because if there wasn't a plant in China GM wouldn't sell any Buicks in China. Obviously, US built Buicks sold in China would be the most beneficial, but when you add in the costs to import cars to China, currency exchange rates and higher US labor rates, they would lucky to sell 4,000 Buicks in China.

So the upside for GM is 400,000 extra cars sold. And remember, the net profits of those 400,000 cars sold there comes back to the USA.

Same reason Toyota,BMW, Nissan & bunch of others have plants in the USA. Yes they employ US workers, but all the profits go don't stay in the USA..
