Bow before me...

We shouldn't have let Japan's royalty exist after WWII.

This thread amuses me.

Bowing has many different meanings in Japan. A bowing/handshake (as the President did) is VERY common with Gaijin (foreigner) that are not fully aware of Japanese customs. It is nothing more than a greeting.

There are several types of bows in Japan but three basic ones that are informal, formal, and very formal. Informal bowing is nothing more than a greeting. Shaking hands is not a Japanese tradition, it is a Western one. You bow to your family, your friends, your customers. A formal bow is a deeper and longer bow. Usually towards a superior at work. A Very Formal bow is an apology and other instances with deeper meaning..

The President made the typical Gaijin mistake of shaking hands while bowing but the Japanese are simply happy that a Gaijin is trying to be conscience of their customs. At worse Obama needs better cultural advisers.

Guys, seriously. It's perfectly ok that the leader of our once great country bows at the drop of a hat to leaders of other countries. Really.

No because the deep bow shows fealty to foreign royalty and goes against every thing this country was founded upon. Remember the whole 1776 thingy? We do not submit to "royalty" in this country. We rejected those caste divisions and it does piss me off that we have the leader of this country bowing to royalty.

Obama really needs to learn to act Presidentially. His need to be liked is overriding the fact the leader of the free world must be respected.

If anything... the Emperor needs to be bowing before our President since the US allowed his family to keep their position when we had every right to stop their prominence.

Nope, I didn't forget anything.

I find this to be insignificant because I actually understand the meaning behind bowing in Japanese. We have plenty of VASTLY more important things to throw Obama under the bus for. This is a waste of time and nothing more than an effort to build anger among those ignorant of Japanese customs.

BTW, this is getting little play in the Japanese press. They are wondering what the big deal is. They are more concerned with the future of US bases in Japan and future dealings with the Korean Peninsula.

Oh, and don't forget that GWB bowed before the Saudi King.

It actually IS a big deal! I know their customs, but look at that faggots DEEP bow, lowering his eyes to the ground. That is a classic sign of inferiority. A small dip while maintaining eye contact would have been more than sufficient (or slapping the brutha some skin).

Shit... even Sarah Palin could have handled that better!

If Obama is going to bow you do it at the same head level as the emperor. Obama bowing extremely low shows a sign of weakness. They take that shit serious over there.

Our government needs our help, they have an addiction. Our government is addicted to our money. Since they always have our best interest at heart it's time we return the favor. We need to have an intervention, for the governments own good of course. It's just irresponsible for us to let people with a known money addiction continue to handle our money. Lets have an intervention now so we can help these sick individuals.

I totally agree. Cheney has decades of foreign policy experience. Japanese do not "expect" a bow from any gaijin. They are quite happy with a hand shake..

But the worse that Obama did was commit an error (bowing while shaking hands and bowing too low). It definitely shows is lack of knowledge and experience in these matters. Its obvious his staff didn't prep him.

Many here are saying that it shows weakness. The question is, weakness to WHO? The Japanese do not see that as weakness. Shit, the Japanese people are ready to give Obama a blow job. Their new government is just a liberal as he is. The Japanese press have barely even mentioned it. The only folks that see it as a sign of weakness are Americans, especially those that have an axe to grind.

I certainly have an axe to grind with this dip shit but I try to focus on the important shit like Obama's efforts to bankrupt our country and totally fuck up our healthcare system. Little shit like this is a waste of time. Frankly most Americans aren't going to care about it in 2010 or 2012. They're going to care about their newly raised taxes, unemployment, and the longer lines they'll get when going to the Doc.

Now if you want to talk about weakness, go check out the shit Obama pulls when he visits China. They are already putting limits on him.
