Social Security spends 700k on retreat

Sometimes even bureaucrats need pampering, and what better venue than arguably the most exclusive resort in all of Phoenix -- especially when taxpayers are paying the tab.

On Monday, the Social Security Administration began a three-day retreat for more than 700 employees, from as far away as Guam, at Phoenix's posh Biltmore Hotel.

The glorified vacation, which SSA officials describe as a "training workshop," cost taxpayers roughly $750,000.

"Wait, isn't Social Security running out of money?" asks 25-year-old Tempe fitness instructor Jen Rezaci. "That's ridiculous."

"That is ludicrous," says Christina Meints, a 26-year-old school psychologist in Tempe, "they couldn't have just trained them in a cafeteria or something?"

The retreat did hold training sessions during the day on things like stress management. The important question is whether it was shiatsu or yoga.

In the evenings, the honored guests enjoyed dinner, dancing, and a casino night. How fitting for those in charge of the nation'ss seemingly doomed Social Security fund. Guess who came up snake eyes? John Q. Public, maybe.

Could this be federal government hypocrisy at work?

In October, lawmakers, including then-presidential candidate Barack Obama, used executives of the now-federally funded investment group AIG as political punching bags after the "too big to fail" company spent about $400,000, almost half the cost of the SSA's lavish desert departure from duty, on a similar retreat.

"Those executives should be fired," Obama said on the campaign trail.

Well Mr. Chief Executive; where does the next buck stop? Club Med or Sandals?

This fits in well with giving financial institutions taxpayer bailout money so they could give bonuses to the execs.

I am willing to bet it wasn't approved last year. If you'll do research, it said the retreat was put up because SSA was tired of getting death threats. It was something planned this year.

I am not defending it in any way, but $750k for 700 people isn't too bad honestly if it were over 3 or 4 days. 250/day per head for hotel and food isn't unheard of.

However, have these assholes never heard of a telecon?! We use them at the Postal service all the time with as many as 150 people on them. Costs practically nothing.

I would imagine heads are going to roll on this one though as Nobama will have to put his cape on to save face.

Looking for sponsorships for 2010 on the car above... PM for details and schedule.

all the money for this comes out of their budget, naturally the money to do this was set aside last year when they put their budget together for this year. other wise it would have taken an act of congress.

SS is running out of money, people are out of jobs, economy sucks the big one, but lets take a $750,000 get-a-way to ease their minds. When do the troops get their trip?

Troops pay for their own trip, or at least I had to when I got leave from Korea. I think it was close to 2k to go on leave.

It's not bad at all. I'm not going to defend it either. Heck my company has postponed/cancelled our last 2 big meetings because of cost cutting.

In defense other that the fact it was probably budgeted is this. There are only a few places where you can have a meeting for 700 people. It's not like they can just meet at the local Super 8 motel. To hold a meeting for that many people often means going to some conference center -- which typically is a resort/spa facility. That means the cost is going to look high because of the food and everything.

All that being said, I would've cancelled the meeting unless it meant losing a large deposit.

Also especially when they are talking about the said organization running out of money in the foreseeable future.

Oh, I'm sure he didn't. Just seems typical of Washington to berate companies for spending cash on "retreats" and gub'ment doesn't think twice about doing the same thing.

The real test will be if Obama does anything about it, let alone acknowledge it.
