Fed' Tax on Cigarettes - 4/1 update ....

First off - I don't smoke .... but I just heard the FED tax (keep in mind there are many other taxes on a pack of smokes) on April 1st goes from $.39 a pack to $1.01 a pack ...... WOW ... a 159% increase! (wish I could wave my "magic wand" for doing nothing to get that kind of extra money!)

So what is the Fed Gov doing here ............ what value are they adding ... or is it for the "children?" .....

be warned ... be afraid ..... because .... something you like or need is gonna get a new tax on it ......

ie Gas, your home's elec, ammo ......

I truly believe for the first time America is in deep trouble - as we have no "checks and balances" in our Gov ... and the mainstream media is a propaganda machine for our Pres ...

Discuss ... and you Lib's please give me reasons to feel better .....

With socialized medicine right around the corner, they're going the same route that Canada took: "sin" taxes are used to fund the health care. Alcohol is also very expensive in Canada.

So...what'll government do when project revenue isn't as large as actual revenue because people cut-back/stop buying cigarettes because of the cost?

But, when people quit smoking where will the get the tax money then. They will just tax something else it might be something you enjoy or need.

You can't fix stupid, but you can vote it out.

You don't understand the point. Think about this: Obama, Pelosi, Emanuel etc. think a 500% tax on ammo is fine.... they think people don't need guns.

They think taxing you for how much CO2 is emitted from your car is fine...... They don't think you should be driving that Dodge (that I am guessing gets 8mpg according to your name).

See, it all sounds wonderful and great until it starts affecting the things you like to do doesn't it. Same idea for the take over and firing of CEOs. AIG, GM....where does it stop???

Kay Bailey is pretty liberal these days. It will suck if she becomes Governor.

Exactly plus we lose one more American Industry and all the jobs that go with it. Plus people will live longer and put more of a strain on the social securiy problem.

It's going to be a never ending increase in price. Haven't smoked in three days... i'm going to put that money I would have bought on cigarettes in savings, $120 a month.

I can see this giving incentive to people to stop smoking, which is great for health reasons, but for tax reasons it's poo poo. Reasons Blackedout01gt already stated.

That's like the oft-heard claim that state lottery proceeds only go to fund schools. Does that ever really happen?

I'm kind of glad, honestly. Maybe this increase will give me the kick in the ass I need to quit smoking. I've tried 10 or so times before, and my downfall is always smoking when I drink. Never been able to kick that part of it, and it always sucks me back in.

I don't know, because I'm obviously not a Canadian resident, but I believe that to be true.

They're pretty harsh on smokers up there. Every pack of smokes, has a picture of a cancer ridden lung or something along those lines. VERY graphic, and a real eye opener for those buying the cigarettes.

I'm with you...

I'm on day 3. Been chewing on some Nicorette 2mg here and there, doesn't feel like it's giving me an nicotine, but maybe it's just a mental thing.

Trying to relearn how to deal with stress at work lol. Usually I go outside and enjoy a smoke, now I want to throw the PC out the window!

Good luck

I feel ya. I'm in a high stress position at work, and under tons of pressure since sales are down so much. I've got to find another way to handle all this stress. Drinking is out, for the reasons posted above. This isn't the most ideal time to quit, but no matter when I try, I always find excuses. I guess now is as good a time as any.

If they want some tax money, they need to tax internet sales at the purchaser's sales tax rate.

Boy, that's the wrong fucking attitude.

What happens when they decide to punish you for expressing any of your other "freedoms"? Recreational driving... eating a whole lasagna... basic cooking at home? Isn't that an excessive carbon footprint for feeding just a small family? Shame on you, TAX TAX TAX TAX TAX. It's fucking ridiculous Brent.

They're hunting for ways to screw you over to put money in someone else's pockets. Where is this money going? Do you know? I don't. That usually means "someone" is cashing in and it won't be anyone you expect or want to.

Freedoms are gone. Big brother is upon us. Give me back Bush.

This is like when they wanted everyone to drive more fuel efficient cars and then got seriously PISSED when the road tax coffers started going empty. When they lose the money from smokes, they'll pull it from somewhere else. Alcohol, firearms, automobiles that are more than 4 cylinders

Wow, everyone that smokes must make 250K+ a year.

I recall Obama stating he would not raise a single tax on anyone making less than 250k a year.

I can not stand smokers that don't respect others. we have to avoid some restuarants becuase of smokers....kill yourself, not me and my family!

sorry its a bigggg time problem with me
Here we go with the pregnant wife thing again..... People have smoked for hundreds and thousands of years. Second hand smoke won't kill you if you're around it 15m a day, and it sure as shit won't make your kid retarded. The crying table is ----> that way.

PS I don't smoke either.
