I thought Obama was going to stop the war in Iraq

Quote:
President Obama will announce plans today to withdraw the bulk of the current 142,000 U.S. troops in Iraq by Aug. 31 of 2010, leaving 35,000 to 50,000 in place until the end of 2011, senior administration officials said yesterday.

Eh, the troops left behind are going to be in an advisory/training/support type role as opposed to direct combat/patrol. Very similar to what we did in the Philipines where we can't take part in any preplanned fight, but can react to contact.

Exactly, but him reading it off a prompter with a gleam in his eye makes the sheeple feel good, where as when Bush spoke of the same thing, it incited riots.

There is no logical way to just stop the war in Iraq, it's that plain and simple. If you just up and leave it will be a mistake we will live to regret. If you think it's bad there now, just pull out, lock, stock and barrel.

Which is exactly what General Petraeus and Robert Gates told him needed to be done. He has good people in place running the war.

IMO, Bush's only real mistake in the Iraq war was staying to damn loyal to Rummy. He should have fired that dipshit after the 1st year of the occupation for ignoring all the Generals that told him to put down 500,000 trooops..

Gates becomes SecDef and what happens? 500,000 troops and we start putting that shit to bed..

I was watching CNN's coverage of the press conference and the talking head actually described the troops in the audience as having a "tepid response" to Obama.

He looked very uncomforatble since the crowd wasn't standing up every few words and clapping feverishly. LOL

I said it in 2004... Iraq will be the new Germany. Balad, Tallil, Al Asad, maybe Mosul ot Tikrit will be sustaining bases for YEARS to come. We've been in Germany for 60+ years. Iraq is the perfect leaping pad for "addressing issues" in the Middle East.
