How can they let Obama keep his BlackBerry?

I've been in the IT industry for almost 7 years now. And I can tell you that there is no way to secure a wireless device in such a manner that it can be considered impregnable. Yes, there are robust wireless security standards like AES. However, no network admin. worth his salt will ever tell you that a system is 100% secure. I've seen high end data infrastructure go down to it's knees due to malicious hacking or DOS attacks.

How can they with any measure of common sense allow the freakin' POTUS keep his BlackBerry for official communications to staff and close personal friends? Every shred of data on that device is theoretically vulnerable even under their "enhanced security". There are many stories out there of people losing sensitive data with PDAs.

This is absolutely retarded IMO. And he was adamant about keeping it and they certainly compromised.

Question is will he be dumb enough to say things that get people dead.

Sometimes I wonder if these politicians really understand the power they hold.

Yep. I'd be willing to bet, since he thinks it is secure he will run off at the text. We'll see how damaging 160 characters can be.

I just got an image of him sitting in a big meeting with either our own people and/or foreign people. Everything all serious while he's sitting their typing away not listening to people talking to him.

I'm guilty of that, but hell - I'm not POTUS and typically what I'm typing about is more important then the meeting I'm in. (outages...etc) I'd hope nothing that important would come across his BB.

Still does not make it acceptable to correspond sensitive/classified information.

All our telephony/network .etc systems are totally independent of each other. i.e. unclassified is 1 set of gear, secret another...TS another...multinational another...etc..etc

I heard on the radio the other day that they woudln't let Biden keep his blackberry, but Obama gets to keep his.

Isn't that discrimination?

Dallas news reports Tony Romo tried to commit suicide last night!

Fortunately he dropped the gun and the bullet was intercepted!

Precisely.

He's a techno-friendly guy and apparently it is important for him to maintain that image as the POTUS. And it seems that this social image is of greater import than National Security. Prior to him getting elected most people automatically assumed he would surrender the BlackBerry as a no-brainer.

He's not willing to make that compromise where most people would do it without thought. I find it interesting and also though provoking that he would give up his PDA considering the enormity of the risk involved. That is being the President using a personal wireless device for official and unofficial communications.

I sent this story to a friend of mine that works at Cisco Systems. And he thinks it's pretty hilarious, especially the "enhanced security" part which is meant to allay our concerns. Oh well.

not when your white.

its only discrimination toward a black person or someone other then white, geez i thought everyone knew this already.

I found this out a few years ago when my idea for "WET" (White entertainment television) was shot down. Said it would bring a negative image toward white people.

I'm SURE he doesn't use it for anything official, it's all about the perception of being techno-savvy. He'll probably jog with an iPod too. He probably keeps in touch with his kids with it.

Really, I don't give a fuck about his Blackberry, he's got a lot of other things to worry about besides someone bluetoothing his address book...

I love the fact that every PDA is called a Blackberry now. General Dynamics custom makes these, not RIM. It doesn't use RIM's servers or software either.

Doesn't really matter.. A device that streams data over the air, is NO WAY able to be perfectly secure. It's absurd to think so.

I think Obama will be the first to have any electronic device like a phone or a Blackberry.

It is a security concern, nothing else from what I understand.
