Welp, looks like it may be hard to buy a new car in cali soon.....

The dam cali liberals are after obama to reinstate and uphold drastic changes to the auto emissions laws in cali. And the new socialist obama epa administrator lisa jackson director is totally on board. I see the automakers eventually pulling out of cali; they simply don't have the resources to comply with this deal. Nothing like beating an industry when it's down. But as I have personally seen everyone out here drives an import anyway, so maybe it doesn't matter.

Seems like cali has bigger issues to fry, like dealing with their state budget shortfall, but what do I know....

You left out the part about how this whole push for tighter emissions standards in California were requested by the Republican Governor, hence the title "Scharzenegger asks Obama for tailpipe rules". This started over 2 years ago.

Bush was even OK with it, IF it's tied to fuel economy standards. And as far as imports, they have to meet the same EPA standards as domestics.

oregon, nevada, and arizona should put up a fence with razor wire along their borders with california and we should all force california out of the u.s....it would be better for everyone.

The hint is "2 years ago". Things have changed dramatically since then. Do you think Arnold is now on board with that? Think about what's happened in the last 2 years...

They're already leaving California in droves, I'm sure this will increase that exodus amount.

Productive rats at that. Cali will be left with 90% unemployment and 100% of the hands reaching out for help.
If I were AZ, NV, OR I would start making nice offers to Cali business owners to look elsewhere.

Welp, looks like obama allowed states to set their own emission standards. It will be interesting to see how the broke US auto industry will respond to this. Could it be that a US automaker will pull entirely out of the california market?

First let me start off by stating that I totally agree with you that the rules are fucking stupid...

However, to say that the automakers will pull out of California would be very incorrect. There are several reasons for that...

1. California is one of the worlds largest auto markets. NONE of the automakers (American, Japanese, Korean, etc) will pull out. They simply can't do it.

2. A LOT of other states in this country have their air pollution rules tied to California. A pullout from CA means a pull out from those states as well. That would be a death sentence for the big 3.

3. What it will mean are VASTLY more expensive cars. It will also mean much smaller cars. Trucks will also get more expensive. For instance, Fords new F-150 "might" meet the new rules with the EcoBoost V6 engine. However that is going to be one of the most expensive engines in the inventory. I think there is also a good chance that Ford might have to try the EcoBoost I4 in the F-150. Now that would be insane...

4. Long term, someone is going to have to figure out some why to chemically alter the carbon dioxide emissions from cars into some other compound. Otherwise, the only method to control C02 emissions is to greatly increase fuel economy.

Wow, you make it sound like increased fuel economy is something horrible. We've been through this before, fuel economy peaked in 1989....it's been going down ever since.

They will end up not selling certain models in California. You won't be able to buy a truck or whatever. That's how this will end up.

We could have trucks that get 40 mpg if people want them. They will cost $120,000 but we can have them.

Obama agreed to this today, btw.

In another move to kick them when they are down:

Quote:
The new president also said his administration would issue new fuel-efficiency requirements to cover 2011 model year vehicles. The rules would be the first step toward a 2007 energy law that requires the auto industry to boost efficiency by 40 percent to at least 35 miles per gallon by 2020.
