Patents on diseases ???

I was listening to some on P.R.I. and they were talking about people having patents on diseases . They were saying that unless you pay them "x" amount , you cannot do research on that certain disease . I have never heard of anything like this . Any truth to it ????

You can patent disease genes, and, yes, that can stop others from doing reasearch on that particular gene.

^^^^^ That's fucking retarded, but sadly I'm not suprised. I hope all them cocksuckers that are filing these patents die of colon cancer.

From what they were saying , you cannot even offer your own body parts for research on the disease if some one has a patent on it with out paying to do the research . According to these people , this is a big reason why certain diseases are not studied or studied very little around the world .

yup..it sucks. All the guys that were working on the human genome project started patenting sections of DNA that make up a gene. This way, if someone does stumble upon a cure for a disease, they will be paying someone a large part of their profits.
