GM loses top spot for first half of year...

Quote:
Toyota beats General Motors in worldwide sales in first half of 2008 as US sales slump

DETROIT (AP) -- Toyota beat General Motors in worldwide sales in the first half of the year.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it sold 4.8 million vehicles between January and June, up 2 percent from the same period a year ago. General Motors Corp. says it sold 4.5 million vehicles in the same period, or about 300,000 less than Toyota.

GM says its total sales fell 3 percent in the first half of the year due to economic pressures and labor disruptions in the U.S. market. But the automaker says it posted record-breaking sales in other regions, including Latin America, Asia and Europe.

GM narrowly beat Toyota in total sales last year to retain the title of the world's largest automaker by sales.

Yes, definitely a text book inverse curve (GM high, losing ground... Toyota low, gaining ground...) it appears the lines have crossed.

From what I'm told if GM does lose its top spot it would take at least 10 years before they gained it back.

You can't be number 1 forever. I'm sure Toyota won't stay number 1 as long as GM did. Their build quality has gone down during the last few years. I'm not saying its crap, but it has gone down and people have noticed.

Is there any connection with the fact more and more Toyota vehicles are being produced in the U.S. by Americans ?

This country... since it's conception, it's been on top forever. Am I wrong?

Technically yes, but do you think it will be number 1 forever. History shows otherwise.

i disagree.

It took the war of 1812 to fully assert our independance. Britian was still pressing sailors into the Royal Navy until then.

It took the civil war for the world to take notice that we were a nation to be reckoned with.

It took the end of world war 1 for us to be acknowledged as a huge world power.

It took world war ii for us to be acknowledged as first among equals.

If GM could cut their Union ties, I bet they'd be in a lot better shape. Just sayin'.

As quickly as we're heading downhill, I think you may be.

Look at England; they're still a superpower today, but they're not nearly what they were in the 18th and 19th centuries.

I'm with you Denny. Even during the dark years of Carter we were still number 1. And if Obama gets elected, we will still be number 1 despite his attempts to change that.

I heard this morning that in a poll 80% of Germans would vote for Obama.

Maybe the cocksucker needs to run for office in Germany, then.

I agree!
They see the overwhelming similarities in social(ist) policy to the leader that shot them to the top, even if it was only for a few years, and they want that back.

Oh if we're talking about America, "The Empire", I don't see how you can think of us as an "empire" until the expansion (imperialism) really started kicking in around the time Texas was annexed. We annexed a bunch a crap between then and the early 1900s with the annexation of the Panama Canal Zone.

We still have a few more years to play out on the "200 year Empire" cycle.

I could write a book on the extreme detrimental effects the UAW has on the Detroit Big 3.

I'm not a fatalist on this subject. I think things will get better, especially if the rising cost of energy begins to stabilize.

Just because there's a smaller gap between 1 and two, doesn't mean the numbers changed their respective order.

Back on subject GM has several new cars coming out that I think would help boost sells. Camaro, Volt, and a hybrid Silverado this coming year. People love trucks and one that will get 20+mpg city should do well unless its a huge difference in price.
