The average American...

Is a fucking moron when it comes to discussing finances/the economy etc.

I'm listening to people at my work argue over the FreddieMac/Fannie Mae thing along with how the FDIC works etc...

So far I have "learned" from listening

-The government isn't going to bail out freddie/fannie and we are fucked an all our loans to them will just disappear (free housing!)

-Our money is insured up to 10k and after that we are screwed

-It's GWB's fault and Obama will make oil go down

-I should put less money in my 401k now because it's going down and wait for stocks and funds to get higher again

I'll update as the day goes on.

I just learned that someone is going to save money by trading her tahoe (owes 26k on it) in for a new Camry and will save money on her 20 mile a day commute because of gas prices in the first year of ownership because of the differnence in gas prices.

Oh yeah she's rolling 9k negative at minimum into the new note...I started to say something but just bit my tounge. I get asked why I don't join the discussions at times because I'm finance major and I just say I didn't learn anything useful in college to teach them.

That is funny, I have a buddy of mine who is taking a beating day trading right now and he told me I was crazy to bump up my 401K and ROTH at this point since the markets were so volatile and everything was down. I guess he forgot about the buy low sell high concept.

I get the same thing at work all the time. Some of the top sales guys make 3-4 times what I do but I always seem to have more cash and a bigger house than they do. They will go blow 500 on a remote control heilcopter at lunch or buy at F350 diesle because they like the "look" of it.

Love it...and these are the first people to scream for government help because they are morons with their dollars.

Fortunately for me, I have a lot of conservative coworkers. We spend our day poking fun at people like this.

Nothing wrong with the company as a whole...but when I'm too "valuable" to move over to the finance department and they blocked my transfer and my advancement of my career because I'm important in my current role and they don't have someone to replace me, it pisses me off. I got a finance degree for a reason god damnit, I don't want to be an operations analyst/team lead all my life.

Assholes and idiots....

No better way to lose a valued employee than blocking his advancement. If you moved up, they might not directly benefit in the short run, but over time, having connections in another department can be REAL beneficial. And the co. itself loses when a competent employee leaves instead of advancing.

I don't blame you for not getting involved . . . close-minded people that talk like they're experts on everything because they watch CNN are almost impossible to get into discussions with - especially on topics of political, financial or economic relevance. Reminds me of those ESPN commercials with people suffering from talking sports out of their ass. The more you get involved, the more the conversation get distorted into something totally unrelated based on something they "heard". I love it when people talk about the economy around me unaware that I have an economics degree . . . I may not have been a 4.0 student but damn, I learned enough to know that most American consumers are nothing but a bunch of sheep unknowingly following everybody else and whatever sounds good.

my regards

I did get a promotion to a team lead (of some of these idiots) but at the same time I'm not happy at where I am at. It does look good on my resume as far as advancement so I'm going to give it a bit more time (Want to have 2 years at this company before I jump unless the perfect opportunity presents itself for me).

As far as age 26-34 ish for them. I'm the youngest in my department at 24. Also the only one with a degree besides the other Team Lead who is over Texas Electric (I'm over Georgia Gas but can still help Electric market people)

Denny - I have tried to help and explain how the economy works and after I explain how speculation/oil/etc etc (and mentioned that the oil bubble would pop one day and within a week come down 20-40 dollars a barrel, thanks 01wc) I was just called a closed minded republican sheep of GWB and that I didn't have open eyes...so I no longer try to educate any of them.

I just don't see the point in doing so; people are going to be ignorant, even if the correct answer is staring them right the fuck in the face. Better to spend my time taking advantage of their ignorance than trying to correct it.

A few new ones today ....fuck me it's not even 8 am today...they are gearing up for their great financial debates near me.

"7 billion dollars will do a lot to fix the economy"
(yes she said 7...i said 700 billion and she told me I was wrong)

"I'm going to take money out of my 401k and invest in oil as it's going to go to $500 a barrel is what I read on blah blah website"

"I was listening to the radio and NPR said..."
I checked out after that and put my headphones on.

Denny and Nate-
The biggest problem we have with trying to "educate" ignorance, is that they don't listen to reason. Just look at this board. When I talk about the days of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, it's because I lived it. I'm not trying to be a damn know-it-all, but just conveying my experiences. Obama is just a Jimmy Carter starter-kit. He wants to raise taxes, and weaken the military, just like Jimmy did.

So, you start the thread off by calling me a moron. I'm an average American. Oh well...

That aside, your co-workers sound like they get their info from The View. If you engage them in a serious debate you will just be wasting your time.

LOL...Think of the "average" person you know...and how stupid they are...

Then realize 1/2 of all people are even dumber then that.

I do not engage them in debate, they ask questions and I just shy away and say I'm not going to get into it. One girl loves to try and get me into debate and thinks I'm scared to talk to her. She is the liberal NPR girl who only listens to NPR and Pelosi is the smartest person in the world to her...so yeah I just put my head phones on and surf stangs.

Jesus Christ make it stop...make it stop.

It was W's fault that oil was 147 a barrel...and now that's it is $65 a barrel I have to listen to...

"Why did he/they let gas get up to $4.00 a gallon and now it's $2. Didn't they know businesses were going to fail and it's their fault we are in this crisis with business failing! Bush should have known better then to let oil get up that high!"

These are the same people who will be voting for Obama because he won't let this happen, he will bring CHANGE!

If you like the IRS, DMV and the Post Office, you will love Obamacare!

“An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.”
Robert A. Heinlein

I have to agree with a quote from former Treasury Secretary William E. Simon: "Bad politicians are sent to Washington by good people who don't vote."

Actually this one voted for John...but she does hang out with the Obama supporters at lunch everyday. There are idiots on both sides.
