U.S. officials have increased their warnings in recent weeks that the Afghan conflict will drag on for years unless militant safe havens in Pakistan are taken out. Military officials say counterinsurgency campaigns are extremely difficult to win when militants have safe territory where they can train, recruit and stockpile supplies.

Go get'em Hamid!

Afghans can take on the Pakistanis and win, nukes or not. After all, look what a slapping they gave the Russians. Oops...the ones in Pakistan they're going after are the very Afghan expats that took down the Reds.

More than 700 families meaning perhaps 4,000 people or more had fled the Arghandab district 10 miles northwest of Kandahar city

Goodness, Pakistan is about 60 miles to the southeast of Kandahar, but they are losing villages 10 miles to the northwest. Kandahar is the second largest city in Afghanistan. This sure speaks pretty poorly about security in Afghanistan.

In all actuality, the approach we're using in Iraq is what should have been used in Afghanistan (from the governmental oversight part), but with better execution. They have corruptness and ignorance running the governmet. Worse than any "well, all governmets do" jokes can imagine.

10,000 Terrorists Hiding in Pakistani Tribal Areas
The Pakistani intelligence service, the ISI, admits in a secret report that 10,000 foreign fighters are hiding in the western tribal areas at the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, mostly North and South Waziristan. This is close to the estimate of 8,000 that Indian intelligence gives.

Ouch. Looks like there will continue to be a lot of fighting to be done in Afghanistan.

No matter who is elected, Afghanistan fighting is here to stay. We've done more for Iraq than we can ever do for Afghanistan. It's all about the terrain. As long as we keep fighting in Afghanistan the way we are, there will NEVER be improvements.
