Hate Speech or Free Speech?

The Herald Tribune has a great article about a "hate speech" case in Canada. It does a nice job of showing how Western Countries are more and more regulating speech under the guise of "hate speech" The major exception being the United States where the 1st Amendment continues to protect free speech with very very few exceptions (attempts to incite violence and things like that.)

In other countries a lot of people on DFWStangs would find themselves in front of a judge and jury.

It is a very long article (3 pages) but well worth the read. I particularly liked that last paragraph:

Quote:
"What we're learning here is really the bedrock difference between the United States and the countries that are in a broad sense its legal cousins," Steyn added. "Western governments are becoming increasingly comfortable with the regulation of opinion. The First Amendment really does distinguish the U.S., not just from Canada but from the rest of the Western world."

This is just like the bill that actually passed the House (thanks, Carolyn Sinclair!) trying to determine what "terrorist speech" was. Gay.

Give me a dollar.

No, they wouldn't. It amazes me how the same folks that want permissive societies also want to regulate speech. The same liberals in this country and in Canada (I hate to be partisan) that want to model our country after the European countries are the same ones that actually want to shut down people at which they don't agree with which is contrary to liberalism.

Look at the Fairness Doctrine. What about the fact that Fox News catches all sorts of flack for presenting a different point of view on things while the media is completely DOMINATED by liberals. These same liberals would LOVE to shut down Fox News and ANY paper presenting a different point of view than theirs. Remember how all of the Conservative Presidential Candidates went on the liberal networks while all of the Liberal Presidential Candidates REFUSED to go on Fox???

Free speech is dying, mark my words.

Bingo! The people who screech loudest and longest about their rights are the same ones who insist on stifling any opinion contrary to theirs.
