New Russian Bomber

Twenty years too late? lol

http://en.rian.ru/russia/20080429/106194482.html

KAZAN, April 29 (RIA Novosti) - A new Tu-160 Blackjack strategic bomber officially entered service with Russia' Air Force during a ceremony at an aircraft manufacturing plant in Kazan on the Volga, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported on Tuesday.

The Tu-160 supersonic bomber with variable geometry wings has been manufactured since 1984 and was adopted by the Air Force in 1987. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, only one such plane was built, and was adopted in 2000.

The new bomber has become the 16th aircraft of its type currently in service with the Russian Air Force. The plane features a new set of fire-control systems, overhauled navigation equipment and avionics.

"Together with Tu-95 Bear bombers, these aircraft will help us maintain strategic parity with potential foes and will bolster Russia's national security," Air Force Chief of Staff Igor Khvorov said.

Only 75mph slower (top speed) than the B52... but damn, they just seem like a flying piece of antiquity and not a modern weapons platform.

The plane bears a strong resemblance to the U.S. B-1A Lancer strategic bomber, although it is significantly larger, and with far greater range, up to 11,000 miles without refueling.

And making a hella fireball if the USAF ever has to knock 'em down....

I tremble in fear everytime I think of what the Russians may unleash with their 1970s technology.

BTW, I got $1 that says Russia will have a full scale conflict with Georgia by year end.

Yep. That thing is considered "old school", now. Technology is moving too fast for a design from 20 years ago, to be effective.

Has Tupolev ever made anything that doesn't reek of reverse engineering? LOL.

I know that the Tu-4 was the only one that was actually captured and reverse engineered, but damn... they must have the least creative group of designers the world has ever known.

I flew on a tu154 this summer. Was not fun at all.

So i'm sitting in the Domestic terminal in Moscow. No mans land if you dont speak Russian. You speak english? Fuck off. Wait to get on the plane, and they dont let us on. Of course no one can tell me whats happening, so i sit there, and sit, and sit, and sit. The whole time i see them working on it on the tarmac. Well 4 fucking hours later they finally let us board. When i step on the plane, the smell of burnt wires/plastic hit me so strong. I could barley breathe. Then the pilot comes on board and was all laffing and making jokes to this kid who had his feet propped up on a seat (the seats on the plane fold down, its wierd). The pilot looked really drunk. It was a pretty nerve racking flight, but i'm still alive

Don't forget the space shuttle and the soviet buran. The soviet shuttle had alot of potential too. Too bad they scrapped the project during/after the collapse.

Newbies, please watch THIS before posting.

Buran in storage at Baikonur in April 2002

On 12 May 2002, most of the roof of the enormous Site 112 where the Buran orbiter and all remaining Energia boosters were being stored collapsed. Funding had been cut so low that routine maintenance had not been performed on the building in over a decade. The roof was known to leak and sag excessively under the weight of snow. This lack of maintenance coupled with strong winds finally led to a structural collapse that killed eight workers and destroyed the Buran.

They had another one (Analog Buran) that was equipped with jet engines. It would take off under it's own power, shut off the engines and glide back to Earth collecting data to help program the autopilot controls later.

But then...
Quote:
Analog Buran abandoned in a Sydney parking lot

Unfortunately, the craft was on display in Sydney for only a matter of months before poor ticket sales forced BSC into bankruptcy. With BSC unable to complete its payments on the craft, ownership of the Analog Buran reverted back to the Russian company NPO Molniya. Molniya lacked the resources to bring OK-GLI back home to Russia and sought a new owner to take responsibility for the vehicle.

Analog Buran abandoned in a Sydney parking lot
NPO Molniya then approached an American company named First FX that specializes in on-line trading on the Foreign Exchange market. First FX arranged for an auction of Analog Buran through a Los Angeles radio station. Although several bids were received, most turned out to be pranks and no legitimate buyer was willing to pay the $6 million minimum asking price. The Analog Buran was instead stored outdoors in a fenced-in parking lot in Sydney protected by nothing more than a large tarp. There the vehicle remained for a year where it fell into disrepair and was subject to repeated vandalism.

LMAO

The wandering craft might have been forgotten there had it not been for a team of German journalists who stumbled upon the hulk in 2004

The people there actually like Americans. They welcome you with open arms, take you into their homes, cook HUGE meals for you, give you presents when you leave. So many kids eyes would just light up when they hear you speak english. Most all the shows on TV are American, translated. Have you seen the Russian Married with Children? LMAO

Didnt have a choice .. It was either that, or treck from the airport, to Downtown, to the huge train station, then take a train to Kazan. Almost an impossible task if you don't speak russian. But yes, it was VERY nerve racking.

Exhibit my ass they are getting the Germans to make it work does the name
Von Bruan mean anything or the hundreds other V2 makers we put to work
in NASA after Sputnik.

Oh yea have you heard they are going to march thru red square like in the cold war next month!

You wonder why we don't just bomb Iran. Get on the clue bus the bear is back!

You kids think I am just a crazy old bastard (well maybe I am) but ya'll need to
question more. Stop taking things at face value I assure you neither German
nor Russia want the USA around. Without us they can run things (except China)
even though history will tell you they don't get along well maybe that's changed.

LMAO.

Sersiously, dude. You gotta chill on the midday drinking. This is two days in a row now.

Here we are havin' a good ol discussion on the Reds having shitty design sense and using antiquated equipment and you start ranting about marches, Commies recruiting zee dead Germans, bombing Iran, global revolution...

Don't take this the wrong way, but you seem juuuuuuuust a bit paranoid.

And I doubt anyone has any interest in getting that hunk of shit airworthy again. If they did, it wouldn't have sat in the desert, or a parking lot, or any number of other locales being vandalized and abused for as long as it was.

The entire thing was for sale for a mere $6 million and no one would touch it.

The people there like Americans, not sure about the Goverment. They are quick to grant visas tho, they love them dollars :-D

Actually things arent as cheap in Russia as you would think. Apartments are cheap, cigs are $1 a pack, food is somewhat cheap, and vodka, very cheap lol.
Cars, clothes, electronics, etc are VERY expensive there. Im speaking for eastern Russia where i was for a month. Moscow is a different place. Every other car you see is Bmw, Benz, Audi, Porsche. POS apts are $4k a month. It's been declared the most expensive city in the world 2 years in a row. If i had the balls and some capital, i would start a exporting business to there.
