Obama's speech concerning Wright

So, we've heard pieces of Wright's crazy sermons.

Here is what Barack Obama has to say about it all….
March 18, 2008 Philadelphia's National Constitution Center

Transcript
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/03/...ipt/index.html

But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren't simply controversial. They weren't simply a religious leader's effort to speak out against perceived injustice.

Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country -- a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America, a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.

As such, Rev. Wright's comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems -- two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change; problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all.

Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Rev. Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church?

So, is this enough? Is it convincing? Does it change any opinion you previously held?

Overall, I was impressed. I'm please to see that real problems and Obama have met head on. This will be his first real test at handling controversy, which he will certainly have to continually deal with if elected president of this great nation.

If this guy was so controversial and out of whack with Obama's way of thinking, why would he still associate with him? It's not like this guy spewed this shit yesterday.

I think its funny every time you see Hussien obama he is close to an american flag i guess he is starting to be more proud of the country and the flag. I bet by the end of the week he has a flag pen on his jacket.

You can't fix stupid, but you can vote it out.

And that, of course, is the real concern here. Why go to this jackasses church for 20 years and even let your kids be baptized by him if you don't agree with his statements.

I went to the same church for 15+ years and never once heard a word of hate preached from my minister. No racial hate, no religious hate, not hate at all. All I heard was the love of Jesus Christ and how we are SUPPOSED to love one another. Since this is a "Christian" minister, I would expect THAT kind of sermon. Guess his Jesus is different.

And I confess that if all that I knew of Rev. Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on the television and YouTube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way
But the truth is, that isn't all that I know of the man.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother -- a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.

For the men and women of Rev. Wright's generation, the memories of humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the anger and the bitterness of those years.
That anger may not get expressed in public, in front of white co-workers or white friends. But it does find voice in the barbershop or around the kitchen table. At times, that anger is exploited by politicians, to gin up votes along racial lines, or to make up for a politician's own failings.
And occasionally it finds voice in the church on Sunday morning, in the pulpit and in the pews. The fact that so many people are surprised to hear that anger in some of Rev. Wright's sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour in American life occurs on Sunday morning.

In the end, then, what is called for is nothing more, and nothing less, than what all the world's great religions demand -- that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Let us be our brother's keeper, Scripture tells us. Let us be our sister's keeper. Let us find that common stake we all have in one another, and let our politics reflect that spirit as well.

Gives you an idea of who he will look up to. If one of my "friends" spouted the shit that this "minister" did, I would punch them in the fucking mouth.

I'm sorry but if this is the best that Obama has got in response to some of the shit that this asshole said then as far as I am concerned he can go get fucked. If he had any guts at all he would stand up and say this guy is a fucking asshole and should be burned at the fucking stake. Of course that is kind of hard to do when you been listening to him for 20 years. Hard to pull that one off and save face. Instead we get this tired old fucking song and dance about how black people are so mistreated in this country. Like that justifies anything this guy said at all. Like that excuses this piece of shit standing up on stage and pissing on the graves of thousands of World War II veterans because he feels like he has been wronged. Like it excuses what he said about 9/11. What a fucking maggot.

Of course he didn't. He would have addressed this long ago if he had.

I've lost all respect for Obama. First he associates with this douche bag then he writes some pretty speech and expects everyone to just throw their hands up and say "Well, OK!!". What a piece of shit.

To be honest I have been on the fence with Obama, and I consider myself a republican (although I'm more issues driven than party driven, but generally fall under the Republican point of view)

However I heard his speech today and frankly found it offensive. I am no longer on the fence with him, frankly I kicked him back to the other side of the fence. I've lost any amount of respect I had for him prior to this morning.

Hillary will bust his ass over this. She's been very quiet about it, but I can assure you, she will make hay out of this before it's all over. I can hear white footsteps running away from Obama as we speak...

This is just the beginning of Obamas end IMO. I now no longer fear his nomination by the Dems. He is as vulnerable as Hillary is IMO.

They are posting in other threads, yet they have conveniently ignored this one though. Kind of curious, isn't it?

"I can no more disown him"

So, he's ok with the labeling of Jews as terrorists.
That we deserved 9/11.
That we are the United States of Ameri-KKK-a.
etc, etc, etc

No wonder he won't wear an American flag, or place his hand over his heart for the pledge.

Support of this type of behavior speaks volumes about his character, and about his supporters character. (Or lack thereof.)

I'm sorry, but every single one of you Sound Like Biggots!!!!

First off I will state my affiliation. I am a 28 year old Middle Class White Male who is a Conservative thinker and hater of all people who ask for hand outs or generally live in California. I was brought up to see past the color of skin. I was reminded growing up that my Grandfather stood between the Barrel of a KKK members shotgun and a black man. I will not put up with Racism, from whites or blacks.

I've been on the fence with Obama as well. Basically the only problem I have with him is his thoughts on "the War".

You all hating on him right now have to realize, YOU'RE WHITE!!!! If you think for a freaking second that this Rev. Wright is something rare in black churchs, you are so wrong.

And this is the entire problem with our seperation of races in this country today. And that was Obama's point yesterday.

His point was that there is nothing that he can do about his affiliation of Wright. There's nothing he can do to change your opinion of Wright or his affiliation to him.

His point was that the problem with the Black community ARE the pastors of Black Churches like Wright.

His point was that the Black Community needs to stop looking back at what happened and NEED to get up and make a better life for themselves without relying on anyone else.

If he actually thought like Rev. Wright, then he wouldn't of had those American Flags behind him (by the way 67Camaro you effing BIGGOT, it's called a Campaign, every politician stand infront of flags. You only notice because your racist ). He would of had "Rev." Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton behind him.

Have you seen those two Racist Black leaders in his campaign? NO.

And you know what? I find it refreshing that a black man can actually run for President of the United States withOUT having those two jackasses standing behind him.

And about him still "defending" Wright.:

I'm Catholic, and I'll defend the Catholic Church. But I don't agree with EVERYTHING that the Catholic Church deems a Sin. Masterbation is a Sin? Come on. Pre-marrital Sex is a sin? Paahleese.

So what makes Obama views of his Church any different from how I view My Church? And I'll gaurantee you'll find the same about yourselves.

who are you to call anyone a biggot? I just found it ironic that he want wear a flag pen or say the pledge "to the flag" or hold his hand over his heart, and now he gets his ass handed to him about his rev that he been ass. with for 20 plus years he is always standing by a flag. So until you know me dont make stupid remarks or statements about me unless you can back them up.

Bull cocky. The civil rights movement in the 60s came from within the black church, and did not teach Afrocentric values. Not even a little bit. This hatemonger (Wright) is no different than Hitler, minus the power he has at his disposal.

You say you've been on the fence, but for his stance on the war: How is that? What has he provided us with, other than a few tasty sound bites?

Oh, btw, thank you for clarifying that I'm white. I was always wondering about that. However, how should my wife feel about the good Reverend's labeling of Israel as a terrorist state? Do my wife and children need to register with the NSA, or some such?

You claim there is nothing Obama can do about his affiliation with Wright, but you're wrong. He could have strongly condemned him. He could have, like Oprah, left the church long ago. He could have left the church that places allegiance to Africa over allegiance to America: it isn't as if there are a shortage of churches out there. His "Everybody does it excuse" that we've all had a minister say somethign we don't agree with is bunk. I don't know a single sane person that woudl stick around a church that preaches that kind of hate, not when there are 1000s of choices in a given community.

As to the flags you mention, these are the same flags that Obama refuses to place on his clothing, the same flag he refuses to pledge to, so in reality it was just a dog and pony show. All style, no substance.

Your analogy of the Catholic Church holds no water. You compare Wright justifying the death of 3000 Americans on 9/11 with masturbating. Apples and oranges, sir. Apples and oranges.

And next time, before issuing a judgmental rant try heeding your own words, before justifying his allegiance to a man that married he and his wife, baptized his children, and calls our coutnry the United States of Ameri-KKK-a.

So you're disgusted with this power tripping racist clown Wright also, no?
Obama has made some great in-roads to transcend racial barriers but this asswipe wasn't gonna be outdone by his "oppressed" parishioner who was running for President for crying out loud. Until now I really don't think Obama was thought of by most as "the black candidate". He's done.

67.......the only racist or biggot I see on this post for 100% sure is the good
reverand standing and not only using the lords name in vain but denouncing
the counrty at the same time. The very values that give him the right to do
such a thing (free speech) he is mocking and every man and woman that faught
for him to be able to do such a thing. I call it treason but then I'm alittle
behind times in my thinking. If lets say someone of middle east decent said
those words would it be taken more serious. So what's racist the fact the man
is NOT in jail for his actions in the name of religion ummmm tell that to
90% of the prisoners at GetMo.

What part of racism being a two way street don't you get?

And your last comment about me being a no good t-sip, on the heels of you calling everyone a "biggot"....

Anyone who doesn't 100% part ties with someone like that, might as well say they're in support of him. It's really black and white here (pardon the pun).

So pull your effing heads out of your white asses and listen instead of judge.
I don't care that the Rev. Wright is a racist. He can say or think anything he wants to, just like I can. I have a serious problem that Obama chose him to be his spiritual advisor even after he decided to run for President. Obama chose a huge racist, who made numerous racist and hate-filled statements over the years not just one mistake, to be one of his advisors. He called for Imus to be fired for one attempt at a joke that most people thought was nothing more than a joke. He then said he would have removed anyone from his staff who made racial or derogatory remarks all the while knowing his spiritual advisor was a racist and hated America.

Obama is a typical liberal hypocrite. Forgive me if I think his "change" is nothing more than change for the worse.

This is about a man who wants to represent all Americans and chose an advisor who hates America and is a major racist. Obama's character and decision making abilities are what is in question for me and most of the people I have heard chiming in on the subject on talk radio.

I've spent a lot of time in black churches of various denominations. I've never seen a black preacher spew so much bullshit in a pulpit. (I'm reluctant to admit, I have see this kinds of bullshit from a Nation of Islam mosque) My opinion is that Rev. Wright is a nutjob and rarity in the black preaching community. I do like how Obama describe Wrights opinions.

We would be making the same mistake that Rev. Wright made in his offending sermons about America -- to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.

I can understand Obama's respect for what Wright has helped him with in his personal spirituality; however his failure to recognize this guy as a dumb ass worthy of absolutely no further relationship is a problem.

I loved the speech. I thought overall it was outstanding. Nevertheless, he is taken the wrong path in dealing with Wright.

What he needed to do was acknowledge that Wright was the source of his new found relationship with Jesus. However, after getting to really know the man, he realized the man had serious flaws and could not stay in his church or listen to him any further. He needed to say he realizes his new relationship with Jesus was not dependent on Wright. Therefore, he has dropped Wright but continued with Jesus at a different church.

This wasn't his point. His point was that we should give him and this "minister" a hall pass just because he suffered through some years of racial injustice. And that's bullshit. This "minister" is no better than David Duke or the Grand Dragon of the local KKK chapter. That is, he's a piece of shit. Not only that but he's fucking delusional. He got up on stage and said the US government created HIV. LMAO, and you want our future president to take advice from this guy while we all just look the other way and maybe mumble about "those poor old black folks sure did have it rough".

Has the whole country just become retarded? All I see are excuses as to why this dipshit should be an advisor to a future president! Delusional religious nuts don't belong anywhere in politics. They deserve to be exposed and publicly humiliated for preying on the minds of the uneducated and the desperate. Want to see what people like this can do when the people don't expose them? Take a look at Iran and how twisted religious bullshit has hurt that country. I'm glad this piece of shit is getting what he deserves.

It's dangerous shit.

Right now he feels enough of a connection with the guy that he won't denounce him as part of a presidential campaign. He baptized his kids. Officiated at his wedding. All of this says a lot about the sway that this guy holds over him. Neither one of these assholes belongs anywhere near the White House. I'd rather see fucking Hillary elected. I'm serious.

No he can't completley condem this preacher or ANY preacher in America.

WHY?

Because of that same Document that every single one of you GUN CRAZY IDIOTS quote from on a daily basis:

Amendment I:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

He's running for President of the United States, who must defend the Constitution.

If you guys want him to Break this Amendment, then he can also break your beloved 2nd amendment. DO YOU WANT THAT?
