Chart porn for the day

Meant to post this last week and got busy. Everyone got excited the markets rallied... retail sales up .3% YOY! Woo hoo! Everything is great. Well, lets see what people are really buying... anyone see anything wrong with these charts? Yea, were spending more money but we are spending more money on essentials instead of the "good stuff."

I blame it on me buying 27 bottles of water in the last 2 weeks. Sorry guys, but I was awfully thirsty!

Classic inelastic demand of energy. The consumer has cut back on durable goods and is starting to cut back on consumer good, next will be cutting back on services.

I take it that you expect a financial armageddon to grip the USA circa 1929?

Na, it is just the start of a recession. It could go really bad, but I don't think it will.

Yup. With energy going up, more of our money is going to that (gasoline, electricity). Goods prices increase because of the oil/energy needed for those goods to be produced and transported. Food prices go up, so we spend more on that. Now there's less cash for toys.
