US Carrier stalked by chinese DIESEL sub

http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_a...00010000000001

I cant believe our guys were so lax to let a loud, noisy diesel sneak up on them. A nuclear sub, i can see, but a diesel surfacing withing 5 miles of the Kitty Hawk? The picket ships and escort destroyers fucked this one up big time...

Diesels run on batteries until they need recharging.

Of course, but their operational window is muuuuch smaller than a nuclear powered submarine, which can generate its power without oxygen, and in effect, stay underwater untill food supplies run out.

I'm not QUITE sure how long the diesel subs can remain submerged on the batteries though....

Depends on how fast they go. It can be quite a while though, I know that. I got $1 that says the Kitty Hawk knew they were there the whole time and was collecting intel just like they were.

maybe they were just trying to draw it in closer since most guys on our carrier have never seen a diesel sub... Then, take it out with M-4's -- or just the prop wash from the carrier....

Something with a tactical nuke? That'd be classified though.

Diesel subs normally can't run underwater unless they are on batteries. The engine would suffocate the crew, it happened to a Chinese vessel a few years ago killing 70 sailors. I'm sure they can run on batteries for several weeks at a time though if not longer. That and it's not a really big secret when a fleet sails by, they could have just been hanging out under the surface waiting for them. Then it's just a matter of how long your food lasts.

being a former sub guy, i am almost certain that chinese sub had a US sub right behind it the whole time cause somewhere underneath every US aircraft carrier is an american fast attack sub.

Does a US Carrier fleet include an nuclear powered attack sub?

Wonder how the Chinese would have handled it (or if they would have) if the US would have made a new ocean floor decoration out of the sub?

What's not being discussed is why it surfaced. I'm curious as to what, if anything, our boys could have done to the other sub for them to experience pants shitting fear? Would they have then surfaced or simply sailed away?

And give up their position? Give the commies as little intel as possible. I doubt it suprised anyone though, other than the fact they decided to surface and show their ass.

Probably surfaced at the imminent threat of 20 or so American war devices sighted directly at them.

Hell, they had to charge the batteries

The real news is that china is still deploying diesel subs. WTF?

Toured the pampanito in san fran - freakin crazy that men were willing to even get into that thing. Interesting that the diesels were mounted upside down with the crankshafts on the top. I expect that the induction noise along with the diesel noise would have been absolutely deafening.

Heh, you're probably right.

And I'm with you on the whole getting into it thing. Not sure I could do it, especially if it was actually going to deploy. Claustrophobia would no doubt quickly become an issue for my can't sit still for 10 minutes self...

Lots of countries have them. They are way cheaper to make and run just as quiet as our subs when submerged. They just can't stay under water as long as a nuclear one can.

Any one of five Los Angeles class fast attack subs.

Why did the Chinese boat surface?
1. To gloat about getting that close to the Kitty Hawk (but not knowing they were targeted the whole time).

2. Because they were lit up like a Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve.

3. Ran out of battery power and the air was getting bad.

I'll pick #2. I've got a cousin who served onboard one of these subs. He said they could wipe out the Chinese navy in less than a month. With one boat.

I call BS on that.
You think the Charlie's navy could last a month?
Charlie don't surf.
