Venezuela SU-30MK

Chavez shows off fighter jets, defying US

8.20am Thursday July 6, 2006

CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez marked Venezuela's independence day by showing off Russian fighter jets his government is planning to buy and new helicopters and rifles it purchased, after Washington blocked US arms sales to Caracas.

Two Sukhoi SU-30MK fighters sent from Russia roared overhead on Wednesday local time as troops, tanks and vehicles filed past Chavez and his counterparts from Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay who were visiting for a summit of the Mercosur trade bloc.

Relations between Washington and Caracas are tense after the United States banned arms sales, citing Chavez's close ties to Iran and Cuba. US officials say the populist Chavez is destabilizing the region, a charge he rejects as propaganda.

Chavez, a former army officer, is seeking to buy 24 of the high-performance Sukhoi fighters to replace his government's F-16 jets in a deal analysts estimate would cost nearly US$1 billion ($1.6bn). He has already bought Kalashnikov rifles and attack helicopters from Russia.

"The US government has sabotaged us, failing to meet contracts and agreements, delaying or not sending parts for US-made aircraft," Chavez said. "See now how our air force is recovering operations, especially with these Sukhoi, the most powerful combat jets in the world."

Joining Chavez at the ceremony was Mikhail Kalashnikov, the Russian who designed the original weapon to bear his name, the AK-47. Venezuela has purchased 100,000 new AK-103 rifles to replace its military's aging FAL weapons.

Too bad one F-22 could probably take out ten of those.

Wow really he spent some of his nations treasure on 24 jets... Damn... we should be afraid. One of our aircraft carriers holds 70 jets right?

A buddy of mine is in a Strike Eagle with the 335th. He has done training with Germany and some other countries that have Migs and Su's and Mirage fighters. His comment... "Like shooting fish in a barrel".

The problem is, he's going to end up being another Kim Jong-il if something isn't done. The biggest difference being, Venezuela has oil money so people aren't starving to death.

The US really needs to rethink the assassination policy. It would be so much cheaper to pay someone to kill these bastards and get it over with than sending our people to force them out of office.

LOL...I lived in Venezuela from 83 to 85 (dad works for Lockheed - training support)...they only need the 24 because the entire nation of Venezuela is roughly the same in size as the states of Texas and Oklahoma combined...it would take less than 5 minutes from ramp to border from their airstrip (in Maracay)...

US policy concerning Venezuela is really messed up right now...they used to be a friendly nation to the US, which is why they purchased F-16s from us to begin with...then, changes in power have led to this...

LOL...the reason Venezuela purchased F-16s to begin with was to replace the aging fleet of Kfir fighters (cheap knockoff of Mirage jet fighter)...

It won't be long before someone plots to overthrow the current government...it has been that way since the 1920's when they had a dictatorship...

All I know is, they sure do have some beautiful women !!!

We don't work that way. If he gets executed it will be during a coup by one of his generals. I promise you we've got a plan in place and if killing him off was in our best interest it would have already happened.

If we really wanted him dead immediately all we'd need to do is send in one cruise missile. Hell I could probably come up with coordinates on someone in the public as much as Chavez, it wouldn't take a CIA agent on the ground 30 seconds.

He will be the author of his own overthrow.

By nationalizing the oil fields, he took on management of those fields. By withdrawing funds for exploration, he started a massive depletion curve that will eventually take a decade or more to overcome.

In short, he stopped watering his money tree in the middle of a drought...
