Canadian Gun Registry

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...tories&s_name=

Quote:
The Conservative government has introduced legislation to formally disarm the contentious long-gun registry, though the bill won't be voted on until the fall.

"The effort of trying to track down every single long-gun (rifles and shotguns) in Canada has been ineffective, costly and wasteful and has not led to a reduction in crime with guns," Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day told the media Monday.
...
The Tories pledged in the last election to abolish the program, which was supposed to cost $2 million a year when the Liberals introduced it but ended up with a price tag of nearly $1 billion over its first 10 years of operation.

That's odd, since gun deaths in Canada are 1/10 what they are in the USA. And Canadians own as many guns per capita as US citizens.

Do you honestly think the USA's gun problem has anything to do with total number of licensed weapons, or number of guns per capita?

when are politicans going to realize that crimes committed with firearms can not and will not be stopped with legislation? I guess if a bill is passed, then the criminals will start obeying the law then and use some other way to committ the crimes?

Read my statement again, I state that Canadians own as many guns as us, yet only have 10% of the number of gun deaths....that indicates a problem with the gun users, not the weapons.

Your source on their number of guns be equal to ours? I don't buy that for a second.

Canadas populatioin is roughly 33,098,932
Ours is 298,444,215

Where are these gun statistics to be found?

[Are you saying that that liberal society has 10 times as many guns per person as the good old US of A does? Seriously?

I did say per capita, that the Canadians own as many guns per capita as the US. And thier guns deaths per capita is 10% of that of the USA.

Comment: there are approximately 11 million firearms in Canada. This total is broken down as follows:

Handguns = 717,000 6%

Rifles = 6,652,000 60%

Shotguns = 3,817,000 34%

Total = 11,186,000
SOURCE: Special Bulletin, Statistics of Estimated Gun Ownership and Use in Canada - Statistics Canada, Justice Statistics Division, May 1977

That's one gun for every 3 Canadians,using 30 year old data. They've got plenty of guns in Canada!

http://www.garrybreitkreuz.com/publi...nsinCanada.htm

Crimes
Total homicides: 551 (2001).
In the year 2001, 171 people were killed in Canada by guns. The same number were killed by stabbings.
Only one person was killed in Newfoundland in 2001.
Canada has about 57,100 police officers (in 2001).
There are about 544 people per police

fedupca.ezhostsite.com/gun.html

171 people killed Canada by guns if 2001, I bet New York City beat that on thier own!

That is a society problem not a gun problem. Banning and registering guns will not fix the problem.

Yep, but they keep trying. Take the responsibility AWAY from the criminal, and blame a gun...an INANIMATE object.

We got all these gang bangers. Gang related crime is probably the great contributing factor.

Hollywood doesn't seem to help with the gun violence. All these actor get up and say they are against guns, but make movie after movie with guns in them.

I wonder what the per-capita numbers would look like in, say, Japan?

I agree, we need to be more like Japan. Abuse and humiliation is not cruel punishment in Japan. Like putting bags on their head. Now, where did I hear of someone doing that to prisoners?

Richard, did you realize that many hand guns in movies are props built by the effects dept, that are actually BIGGER than the real life guns?? And we all know the cannon-like firing sounds are dubbed in!!
