EMP terrorist attack????

http://www.washtimes.com/national/20...3434-8775r.htm
Quote:
The United States is highly vulnerable to attack from electronic pulses caused by a nuclear blast in space, according to a new book on threats to U.S. security.
...
An electromagnetic-pulse (EMP) attack uses X-rays and gamma rays produced in a nuclear blast in three separate waves of pulses, each with more damaging effects, and would take months or years to repair, the book states. The damage to unshielded electronics would be irreversible.
...
An EMP attack would damage the national power grid, unprotected computers and all devices containing microchips, from medical instruments to military communications, and knock out electronic systems in cars, airplanes and those used in banking and finance and emergency services.

"An EMP attack potentially represents a high-tech means for terrorists to kill millions of Americans the old-fashioned way, through starvation and disease," the book said.
I would like to add that it would take longer than years to recover. Every IC burned out would have to been remade. That would also include IC-s that are used to design and manufacture IC-s. The replacement of end user products can't be done until the replacement of manufacturing tools are done.

As dependent as we have all become to electronics a EMP would be a major
blow IMO.

Don't get me started on a large EMP like one in space that would knock out
just about everything for years.

I posted that to point out the terrorist could attack us in an unconventional way that could kill more people, than if the nuke went off in NYC.

Good god! Talk about OLD news!

The ONLY things that I know of that are hardend, are SOME military systems.
Better keep that OLD points distributor to your old car or truck if you wanna have possible transportation if a EMP attack ever occurs.

It would very little effect overall. You can build your own EMP device yourself. You can rent them even. This is hype, that is all.

I hope there is never an EMP attack in the USA, but in case there is, I would like to stay now that I told you so because my computer won't work afterward.

Because it "can" adversely affect things, not that it "will"

Your vehicle shields the PCU fairly well, especially on wet ground. Not guaranteed, of course.

The biggest danger is to devices that are designed to receive a signal; cell phones, TVs, etc.

Of course, one could make the argument that Americans are incapable of surviving without a phone attached to their ear and a computer in front of their face, but I seem to remember a time, maybe 20 years ago, when these things weren't around and we got by just fine.

Also, the area of effect determines the potential, so the larger the area the more powerful it would have to be. If directed it can be pulse-modulated and aimed at small targets, but then again you could sit in a tower with a scoped rifle and create more havoc.

try this for battling some of the nuclear scare-hype:

And if you really want to see first hand what one is capable of, you can rent one with option to buy, buy one outright, or build your own from kit or from scratch.

http://www.amazing1.com/emp.htm

$11k for a 400 joule unit isn't bad.

I see a new movie coming out. Some one could stealing one of those. If you could disable police cars with it and rob banks and such.

Or you could just find a hookup on a good 50BMG and do hellaciously more damage.

There are already underground units available for zapping cell phones.

It could conceivably fry a magneto, and possibly the electrical system (lights etc) but I doubt it. On an old deisel it probably wouldn't do anything except damage the charging system.

Scott, you're such a badass.

How the hell could an EMP pulse knock out a magneto? Hard to get more sticks and stones than one of those! Does it knock out the magnetism in a permanent magnet?

The coil, baby. If you ever got one wet, you'll know what 01 was talking about. The EMP will fry the insulation and then you have a rusty spinning magnet.

Hey man, speaking of magnetos we got a new sponsor on the sprint car; Stillettos Cabaret!
