To think we could have easily avoided the whole middle eastern crisis

At least until 2001, the primary reason the islamic world disliked the USA was because of our support of Israel. Islam IS a sworn enemy of Judiasm. The Jews did steal Palestine in 1948, so I can partially understand thier anger. But prior to our support of Israel, they were content to leave us alone.

If at anytime in the 80's or early 90's we had withdrawn our support of Israel...... Irag, Iran, Jordan and maybe even Egypt would have likely attacked Israel. Israel has a FORMIDIBLE military (funded and supplied by the USA), with nuclear weapons capability. They could have defeated all these countries combined, although they might possibly had to use thier nukes to do it.

After the smoke cleared, we could have bought oil cheap from the now HUGE country of Israel, which would encompass most of the middle east. Yes, the Jews would have been pissed because we pulled the rug out from under them, but they love money, and they could ruled the whole middle east after the brief war.

The reason behind this current war on terror is osama. His reason for hating us is because we brought disdain upon his home country(In his eyes). By sending troops there and now have an economy with them. Were polluting their culture with ours and it upsets him. As for the rest of the problems in the middle east, well its simple. Greed for power. The religion they all claim to believe in calls for unity which the whole region used to have. Over time things led up to the problems, but the big contributer was after WWII. After WWII we and Britain bein the mighty ones we are said " hey, lets make some some countries over there so we can keep track of them." In the process that fucked up all sorts of regions, not just the middle east. Africa and the old automan empre(Bosnia, serbia, lativa, croatia, and i think 2 more).

Osama is just the current poster child for unrest between Muslims & and the USA. The problem predates him by many years.

When Israel was estabished in 1948, virtually no one supported them or even recognized them as a country, including the US. But the muslims then were so poor, and still lived virtually in the stone age, that they could offer little resistance. The vast oil reserves in the middle east were discovered in the 1950's, so the muslims lot if life changed quickly. By this time, the USA and several other countries supported Israel, so the stage was set for future conflict. But from the mid 50's until the late 70's, most middle eastern countries were content to live under puppet governments that the USA setup, after all, we were making them VERY rich buying all thier oil.

But the current problem started in 1979 when extreme Muslims clerics overthrew the puppet Shah of Iran, and Ayatollah Khomenei took over. Then Sadam Hussien (who had been a US ally) parted company with the US government, and the Soviets were raising hell trying(and ultimately failing) to take over Afghanistan. Add in 20+ plus years of the PLO virtually inventing modern terrorism, and all the pieces came together to create the current mess, all while Osama was still in high school.

Oh, and the primary reason Osama hates the US, is because we support Israel.

I agree with you mostly that we hold back Israel from doing what it wants, but I don't agree that the land was stolen in 1948.

The 1948 war was the defining point for Israel and birth as a new country.

Quote:
On May 14, the British Mandate expired. The State of Israel declared itself as an independent nation, and was quickly recognized by the Soviet Union, the United States, and many other countries.

Over the next few days, approximately 1,000 Lebanese, 6,000 Syrian, 4,500 Iraqi, 5,500 Egyptian, 6,000-9,000 Transjordanian troops and unknown number of Saudi and Yemenite troops invaded Israel. Together with the few thousand irregular Arab soldiers, they faced Israeli forces numbering 29,677.
Quote:
1949 Armistice Agreements
In 1949, Israel signed separate armistices with Egypt on February 24, Lebanon on March 23, Transjordan on April 3, and Syria on July 20. Israel was generally able to create its own borders, comprising seventy-eight percent of Mandatory Palestine, fifty percent more than the UN partition proposal allotted it. These cease-fire lines were known afterwards as the "Green Line". The Gaza Strip and the West Bank were occupied by Egypt and Transjordan respectively.
