The Theocracy of Iraq

Bush did a wonderful job of creating a theocracy in Iraq like Iran. We should be proud.

LONDON, JULY 16, 2005 (Zenit) - The long-awaited constitution now being prepared in Iraq could effectively turn the country into an Islamist state, warns the auxiliary bishop of Baghdad.
In a letter presented July 14 to the British branch of the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), Bishop Andraos Abouna expressed his concerns that this new constitution could also include automatic discrimination against non-Muslims.

The letter was signed by the leaders of nine Christian denominations, and it makes a desperate plea for equality of all religious groups.

Underlying the leaders' concerns are reports that Shiite Muslims -- Iraq's largest religious group -- are pressing for a permanent constitution that enshrines Shariah, or Islamic law.

The Church leaders are fearful that their faithful could become victims of the discrimination and persecution that Christians face in other places where Shariah is imposed.

Another updated article.

Quote:
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Framers of Iraq's constitution will designate Islam as the main source of legislation — a departure from the model set down by U.S. authorities during the occupation — according to a draft published Tuesday.

The draft states no law will be approved that contradicts "the rules of Islam" — a requirement that could affect women's rights and set Iraq on a course far different from the one envisioned when U.S.-led forces invaded in 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein.
Great, the next generation will have to fix this problem.

Latest news, on the new theocracy.

Quote:
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iraq's al Qaeda group said on Thursday that Islamic sharia law should be the only legislation to govern the country, according to an Internet statement.

"The Islamic sharia is the right religion and anything else is wrong and rejected, including the constitution. No human being is allowed to legislate laws which are the right of God alone," said the statement posted on a Web site frequently used by the al Qaeda organization in Iraq.
Woohoo!

Latest news.

The Bush administration is significantly lowering expectations of what can be achieved in Iraq, recognizing that the United States will have to settle for far less progress than originally envisioned during the transition due to end in four months, according to U.S. officials in Washington and Baghdad.
...
"We set out to establish a democracy, but we're slowly realizing we will have some form of Islamic republic," said another U.S. official familiar with policymaking from the beginning, who like some others interviewed would speak candidly only on the condition of anonymity. "That process is being repeated all over."

BASRA, Iraq - Southern Iraq, long touted as a peaceful region that is likely to be among the first areas returned to Iraqi control, is now dominated by Shiite Muslim warlords and militiamen who are laying the groundwork for an Islamic fundamentalist government, according to senior British and Iraqi officials in the area.

It's okay mang. It won't last long.

EDIT: On second thought, maybe it will. Basra is not far from where I'll be come this time next month. Maybe I'll have to start my trigger finger exercises.

Great, so with the way this is heading one has to wonder if this "new" government will be worse than when Saddam was in power Perhaps it would have been wise to somehow win Saddam over and use him as an instrument to fight Iran?

There has been speculation for some time that this was a possible direction that the new government could take. I really hope that cooler heads prevail, but it would not surprise me that Islamic influences could push the new goverment toward a theocracy. Islam taken to an extreme always seems to go in that direction. And there is nothing that the US can really do to change that; even after going as far as allowing Iraq a chance at a bright, prosperous, and safe new future. Which is just really tragic for everyone involved.

Islam is not compatible with the western world; IMO a world conflict in the future with Islam vs. everyone else is quite likely.
