Are Iraqi insurgents and terrorists the same thing?

And when did they become what they are?

I have seen this over and over again and wanted to get some opinions. I have never really seen a clear cut definition.

They're not Iraqi's fighting...so the term insurgents doesn't really work...even thought that's what the news is calling them....

They're extremists from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Jordan, Egypt, all over......they are TERRORISTS

They're engaging a foreign entity in ways that generally defy the Geneva Convention.

I believe that strictly makes them terrorists.

I believe that strictly makes them terrorists.
The convention doesn't define them as combatants, since they display neither an insignia nor a uniform. Therefore they can be treated any which way we like. Thus our treatment at Hotel Gitmo.

Now, there is a line in the agreement that reads "if there is any doubt whether a person is a combatant or not, then he shall be treated as a legitimate POW". This statement is what the America haters like to point to and use to say that these prisoners are mistreated under the convention.

However, if you read the requirements to be considered a legitimate POW, which is protected by the Convention, you'll see that these people don't even meet a single requirement.

terrorist - a person that systematically uses terror for means of coercion
insurgent - revolts against civil authority

Thus if a person who uses terror systematically in a revolt against civil authority (doesn't matter if it's *their* civil authority) they can be both an insurgent and a terrorist

they are the same thing. and as someone who is over here fighting them they are combatants. i have had to endure many many houras of briefing on this type of thing and the rules of engagement. if they surrender they then become an EPW.

Why put off 'till tomorrow what you can put off 'till the next day?
