win2k pro ... password

My brother called me last night with this problem. I have no idea how to get around this...... He turned on the computer a few days ago, and he couldnt get internet access. He uses SWBell dialup. The access dial up numbers had changed (to someone's house?). So he reboots and for the first time it prompts him for a windows password. He doesn't remember setting one, and now he is stuck at that initial windows screen. So, how can you reset the windows password? It almost sounds like someone hacked his computer up to me... any other ideas?

DOH!

Format/Reinstall.

He may have a chance to hack the password files if the drive is in Fat32 format. If not, there's not really any other choice ... Recovery Console will ask for a password too, so that's out.

I have a wonderful little CD called ERD Commander XP that I use all the time at work, it has a feature included in it which allows you to reset the Administrator password, I also know there was a bootable floppy that used linux to reset the password in NT, not sure if there's one for Win2K though.

You can either do the ERD Commader thing or there are free downloadable Linux boot disks that will reset the administrator password. ERD commander is safer but sometimes harder to find. The linux boot disks do work with W2K/XP, I have tested them before.

I'll have to check that ERD Commander out. I knew linux boot disks would work, but you still have to manually hack the file, correct?

I've never run into this problem before, so I've never had to try any of these options ... just know they work by hearsay
