ScanDisk help!

I am trying to run Scandisk on Windows ME. I am doing this because I am having problems with IEand opening other programs. I tried to do a defrag and it said to run scandisk first. Anyway, every time I run scandisk it never finishes. It says that scandisk has restarted 10 times because some program could be writing to C:. I don't know how to stop this(these) program(s) from writing so that I can finish scandisk and then run defrag. Anybody help??

You probably have an anti-virus or a firewall program writing to the HD. You need to disable these before you can run Scandisk.

Ok, I don't know what I am doing but I went into msconfig and changed startup to diagnostic. then I tried to restart and it popped up asking me how I wanted to restart, normal, booted or safe. I went into safe mode and ran scandisk and defragged the drive. Then restarted and changed startup back to normal. Now I still can't scandisk of defrag from normal booting. How do I check to see what is writing to me hard drive so that I can turn it off so that I can do a scandisk?

Just run it from Safe Mode. Easiest and fastest way to get it done. Otherwise, you need to end all tasks running (other than Explorer), and hopefully nothing is running that isn't showing up in the tasklist, that will keep it from finishing.

With 95 - ME, I've always ran, and recommended people run scandisk and defrag from Safe Mode.
